Alton Carswell, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hello, this is Dr. Alton Carswell. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with 16 years of experience working with singles, couples, military members, LGBTQ individuals, people of color, and undocumented immigrants from various countries. If you are looking for a therapist who will listen and acknowledge your unique perspective, you don’t have to look any further. I hold a Master’s in Clinical Psychology and a PhD in Media Psychology, both from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara. I am also an alumnus of Antioch University in Los Angeles. My extensive work with diverse communities has shaped my approach and deepened my commitment to affirming and inclusive care. Some of the theoretical approaches I utilize include Affirmative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. My specialties are LGBTQIA affirmative studies, LGBTQIA mindfulness, and Media Psychology. I work with individuals, couples, families, and groups across all ages—teens, adults, and elders (65+). I support clients who identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian, non-binary, queer, transgender, and those allied with HIV/AIDS and racial justice. I also work with clients from bi-racial, African-American, Asian-American, and other racial or ethnic backgrounds. My communication style is client-centered and affirming. I strive to create a safe space where individuals can practice discussing difficult topics, find their voice, and use it effectively in their situations and relationships. My journey to mental healthcare began with a desire to help others in my community. When I faced challenges in my own life, working with a therapist supported my self-development and progress, inspiring me to pursue this career. For action-oriented clients, I develop SMART goals that balance achievable outcomes with reasonable self-regard for barriers and negative thoughts.
