“Alyssa was my first therapist, and I have to say my experience with her was nothing but positive. Without going into deep detail (obviously), she helped me through a really challenging time when I was feeling overwhelmed with anxiety over work and my personal life. She coached me through positive ways of dealing with everyday sources of stress while also helping me make tangible and realistic goals (short and long term) for making positive changes to make myself happier. (All of which I followed through on, and am happy I did.) I should have written this review sooner, but I'd recommend Alyssa to anyone. She's a self-proclaimed "cheerleader" when it comes to helping people accomplish goals or overcome challenges, but she's more like a really awesome, Denzel Washington-like football coach who kindly listens to what you have to say and points you in the right direction.”

“I've been working with Alyssa for 1.5 years now. She's helped me learn a lot about myself and my emotions. She does not jump to conclusions or thinks that she knows you better than you know you, rather she encourages you to learn about yourself. She's patient, yet pushes you to open up your mind. I get along with her very well and my life has changed since working with her!”

Getting to know Alyssa Friedman

Are you struggling with depression? Anxiety? Relationships? Sexuality? Life comes with struggles and transitions that are often difficult to manage on our own. With assistance and support, there can be increased awareness of self and the environment, making life infinitely more enjoyable. I am a licensed therapist in the state of Connecticut, with a Master's in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor's from New York University. I specialize in anxiety, depression, grief, relationship termination, lack of focus, identity confusion, and issues pertaining to sexuality. In couples work, I focus on the importance of communication, trust, and sexual awareness. My approach to psychotherapy emphasizes the needs of each individual client. My framework is relational and supportive, with emphasis on gestalt, existential, here-and-now therapy, as well as cognitive behavioral techniques. I continually increase my knowledge base through postgraduate endeavors in the field so that I can remain updated for my clients and connected to my practice. In this volatile time in which we live, we are all struggling to find sanity in our new normals. I am here to help explore new coping strategies and assist clients in finding increased peace of mind as daily challenges emerge.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic approach is a mix of cognitive therapy and gestalt therapy. I attempt to make all of my sessions conversational in nature and believe strongly in the therapeutic alliance. I seek to help clients feel more in control of their life experience and relationships through tools, support, and cognitive restructuring. Finally, I feel thankful for the work I do, and I believe in the growth properties that come from the therapeutic introspection.
