Alyssa Horman, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist who works with adults and couples navigating anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. Many of my clients are functioning well on the outside but feel overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck, or unsure how to move forward. Others are struggling with patterns in their relationships, carrying hurt from past experiences, or adjusting to a new chapter of life. I’m especially passionate about helping people navigate the transitions that can come with dating, committed relationships, marriage, career changes, moving, becoming a parent, or simply figuring out what comes next. These periods can bring up anxiety, self-doubt, conflict, or old patterns that may feel difficult to understand on your own. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. Together, we’ll slow things down, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and identify the patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Rather than simply managing symptoms, I want to help you understand what is underneath them and create changes that feel meaningful and sustainable. I draw from approaches including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman Method, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. I tailor therapy to your needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, especially if you’re not sure exactly what you need or where to begin. You don’t have to have everything figured out before we start. My goal is to create a space where you feel understood, supported, and able to be honest about what’s really going on.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, collaborative, and genuine. I believe therapy should feel like a space where you can be honest without worrying about being judged or having to say the “right” thing. At the same time, I don’t believe therapy is just about having someone listen. I’ll actively work with you to understand what’s happening, identify patterns, and help you move toward the changes you want to make. I take a relational and strengths-based approach, which means we’ll pay attention not only to what you’re struggling with, but also to the relationships, experiences, values, and strengths that shape who you are. When anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or a major life transition brings you to therapy, we’ll explore both what is happening in the present and how past experiences may be influencing the way you respond today. You can expect me to be curious, compassionate, and direct when it feels helpful. I may ask questions that help you look at something from a different perspective, notice a pattern you hadn’t recognized, or consider what you actually want rather than what you feel you “should” want. I also recognize that therapy can look different for everyone. Some sessions may involve processing a difficult experience or emotion, while others may focus more on practical strategies, communication, decision-making, or taking steps toward a specific goal. Most importantly, I want therapy to be a collaborative process. We’ll regularly check in about what is and isn’t feeling helpful so that our work continues to fit your needs. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to work on before your first appointment—we can figure that out together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is primarily about getting to know each other and understanding what brings you to therapy. We’ll talk about what you’ve been experiencing, what feels difficult right now, and what you’re hoping will be different as a result of therapy. We’ll also begin identifying patterns, relationships, or life circumstances that may be contributing to what you’re experiencing. From there, we’ll develop a direction for our work together. Depending on your goals, therapy may focus on understanding and managing anxiety or depression, working through relationship patterns, processing past experiences, navigating a major life transition, or building skills for communicating and coping more effectively. Sessions are conversational and collaborative. We may spend time processing emotions and experiences, exploring relationship dynamics, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, identifying your values, or developing practical strategies to try between sessions. I’ll tailor the pace and focus of therapy to what feels most useful for you. As we continue, we’ll regularly revisit your goals and notice what is changing. Therapy isn’t about having every session look the same—it’s about creating a space where you can better understand yourself, feel more connected to what matters to you, and make meaningful changes in your life and relationships.
