Getting to know Alyssa Kosmer

Alyssa Kosmer provides psychotherapy for adults, specializing in the treatment of acute and intergenerational trauma, recovery from religious abuse, narcissistic abuse, and cult recovery. She offers her clients a safe and supportive space, working to deepen self-awareness and foster self-compassion. Alyssa holds a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Baruch College, City University of New York. She is also certified in Integrated Trauma Studies by The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in NYC, a 2-year post-graduate training. With her expertise in cult recovery, Alyssa provides education and resources on the dynamics that kept survivors shackled for so long.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The most important thing for clients in recovery from cultic abuse is to know that they have the right to safety, the right to autonomy over themselves and their own mind, and the right to stay or leave at any time without repercussions. Alyssa Kosmer provides client-centered psychotherapy, ensuring that clients can maintain emotional safety and autonomy over themselves and where they want to go. Her approach is integrated and psychodynamic, meaning that the focus is on a client's developmental history, personal narrative, and unconscious mind, and a variety of therapeutic interventions will be used as appropriate. Survivors can feel that their reality has been turned upside down after exiting a cult, and feelings of shame, betrayal, and fear can shape their everyday reality. Cults and high-control groups use abusive tactics of coercive control and undue influence to control their group members. It may be difficult to function in the real world after exiting a group and losing a support system that has been your whole world. There are many paths to healing and recovery, and therapy can be an empowering first step.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

To begin therapy, clients are offered a free 15-minute consultation, and from there we can book an intake appointment. The first few sessions are more structured, and clients will be ask to discuss their personal and developmental history, family of origin, and particular issues that they want to address in therapy now. After this, sessions will be largely unstructured, and clients determine what it is they want to address on a weekly basis.
