Alyssa Kushner, LCSW

Alyssa Kushner, LCSW

Psychotherapist
MD
Hi! I'm an LCSW and trauma therapist based in NYC, licensed and seeing new clients virtually in both NJ and MD. I specialize in working with teens, young adults, and adults experiencing relational and complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety, burnout, codependency in relationships, people-pleasing, and perfectionism. I also support anyone interested in shifting their relationship with alcohol. I bring a trauma-informed, somatic, relational, and holistic approach to therapy. I hold compassion, empathy, and a warm therapeutic space as central to my work. My priority is always to develop a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship first. Then, according to your needs, I integrate experiential practices such as somatic strategies, mindfulness skills, self-compassion development, creativity, guided meditations, and help connect your mind and body. I am trained in EMDR and DBT and incorporate these modalities into our collaborative treatment plan. I earned my Master's in Social Work from New York University and my Bachelor's degree from Rutgers University. I love to empower and challenge my clients to heal from the past and develop new, more helpful ways to cope with emotions and difficulties. Together, we will work to help you become a more confident and authentic version of yourself-one that prioritizes your own needs. I believe therapy is about finding a balance between gaining insight into how your past impacts your present patterns while focusing on the here and now and taking action toward change. I find that everyone has an innate ability to heal and progress, and the therapeutic process is meant to unlock that. I look forward to connecting!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a relational & trauma therapist so my first priority is to create a safe space for us to develop trust and a strong therapeutic relationship. We will then work together collaboratively to develop individualized treatment goals. Depending on need, I will bring somatic and mindfulness-based strategies, teach resources for you to manage and regulate emotions & stressors, and will integrate EMDR or DBT skills if needed. I take a holistic approach so we will discuss your whole self - emotional and mental health, social health, physical health, and spiritual if you desire.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions are 50 minutes and usually weekly, however I am happy to discuss time and frequency based on your needs. In the first session I will learn more about your history, what's bringing you to therapy, and we will discuss your treatment goals collaboratively.
