Dr. Amanda Cooney, PhD

Psychotherapist
NJ
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist working with individuals who have experienced significant trauma, including early relationships, abuse, neglect, loss, and high-stress environments. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful and capable, but find themselves still impacted by these experiences in how they feel, respond, and move through their day-to-day lives. This can show up in ways that are difficult to put into words, such as feeling on edge, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that don’t fully make sense but are hard to shift on your own. My approach is focused on helping you work through these experiences in a way that is grounded, intentional, and not overwhelming. I integrate evidence-based trauma therapies such as EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS), depending on your needs and goals. This work goes beyond insight alone. We focus on how these experiences are held in your body, emotions, and responses, and begin to shift them in a way that feels more steady and easier to move through. Therapy with me is collaborative and paced in a way that feels manageable, while still allowing for meaningful progress. You do not need to have everything figured out to begin. The goal is not to force change, but to create space for things to shift in a way that feels more integrated, clear, and aligned with you over time.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You don’t need to come in knowing exactly what to say or how to explain what you’re feeling. Sessions aren’t about getting it “right,” and there’s no expectation to present yourself in a certain way. I tend to be engaged and direct, and I’ll step in when needed so you’re not just circling the same thoughts. At the same time, we pay attention to what’s coming up in real time, so the work stays grounded and not just intellectual. Over time, most people notice that sessions feel more focused and productive, and that what we’re doing starts to carry over outside of therapy, not just stay in the room.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is collaborative, structured when helpful, and always tailored to the individual sitting in front of me. In the first few sessions, I focus on getting a clear understanding of what’s bringing you in, your current concerns, patterns you’re noticing, and any relevant history. I’ll ask questions, but I’m also paying attention to how things show up in real time (how you relate, how you process emotions, where you get stuck). Together, we begin to make sense of what’s going on beneath the surface, not just the symptoms. From there, sessions tend to be a mix of insight and practical work. Some days we’re processing deeper emotional experiences or past events, and other days we’re working more actively with tools, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, building emotional regulation skills, or shifting behaviors that aren’t serving you. I integrate approaches like CBT, EMDR, and parts work (IFS), depending on what’s most helpful. If we’re doing EMDR or more structured trauma work, I’ll always make sure you feel prepared and grounded before we go into it. I also tend to be engaged and interactive in session. I’ll ask questions, offer observations, and help guide the process, but I’m not here to tell you who to be or what decisions to make. The goal is to help you better understand yourself, feel more stable and confident in your internal world, and make changes that actually stick outside of session. Over time, therapy becomes less about just managing symptoms and more about feeling more like yourself, more clear, more grounded, and more in control of how you move through your life.
