Getting to know Amber Hurst

Hi there! I'm Amber, a Licensed Professional Counselor, wife (married for almost 21 years), and mother of two teenage boys. I have been working with kids of all ages and their families for over 18 years. As a client-centered counselor, I believe that trust is at the heart of any healing relationship. Whether I’m helping a young child strengthen executive functioning skills, supporting a teen through life’s ups and downs, or working with a family feeling stressed or disconnected, my goal is always to create a space where everyone feels safe, respected, and truly heard.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I often work with kids and teens struggling with symptoms of ADHD and/or anxiety (school, peer, family related). During our initial sessions, we'll delve into how these symptoms impact daily life and set goals for how the kid/teen wants life to look like in the future. Most of my clients, with consistent sessions, see positive progress in a few short weeks. With kids, I blend CBT and play therapy—Play gives kids a way to express big feelings when they don’t yet have the words and can be a powerful tool for growth and healing. With teens, I focus on meeting them where they are. I get that therapy can feel forced at first, so I work hard to build trust through honesty, empathy, and respect for their independence. When I work with families, I try to see things from each person’s point of view. I aim to support better communication, stronger understanding, and deeper connection. No matter someone’s age or situation, I commit to showing up as a steady, compassionate presence—ready to walk alongside them as they work toward healing and resilience.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In my practice, I often use CBT. In the first session, we'll explore what brought you (or your child) to therapy and discuss how we can work together to achieve progress. With CBT, we'll look at how thoughts affect emotions/behaviors and vice versa. In later sessions, we'll work on replacing negative thought/behavior patterns with positive ones, changing feelings/emotions for the better.
