What should a new client know about working with you?

I see therapy as collaborative; you are the expert on your own life, and my job is to bring structure, tools, and an outside perspective to help you get where you want to go. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, so early on we'll spend time figuring out what actually fits you: that might mean EMDR if trauma is part of the picture, CBT or ACT if we're working on patterns of thought and behavior, IFS if you want to understand different "parts" of yourself that feel in conflict, or simply a person-centered space to process and strive to align with your most authentic self. Sessions with me tend to feel conversational rather than clinical. I'll ask questions, but I'm not going to make you fill silence or perform progress. Some sessions are about digging into something hard, others are about processing how you're operating day-to-day. I bring a background in human development and early childhood education to how I think about people, which means I pay attention to where patterns started, not just how they show up now. A few things to expect: -The first session is mostly about getting oriented: your history, what's brought you in, and what you want out of therapy. It's okay if you don't have that fully figured out yet. -I'm LGBTQ+ affirming, and that's about personal care, not just checking a box. You won't need to educate me or brace for judgment. -If you're neurodivergent, I try to meet you where you are rather than asking you to mask or conform to a "typical" session format. -The pace is yours to set. I'll challenge you when it's useful, but you are always in the driver's seat.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

First session (intake): We'll spend the first session getting a full picture of what's brought you in: your history, current stressors, relationships, and what you're hoping therapy will help with. I'll ask about things like previous therapy experience, relevant medical or mental health history, and any patterns you've noticed in yourself. This session may be more structured than later ones so we can start moving in a general direction, but it's still a conversation, not an interview. Building a plan together: By the end of the first session or early in the second, we'll start identifying what we're working toward and which approaches make sense for you. If trauma is central to what you're dealing with, we might build toward EMDR, TF-CBT, or more somatic approaches. If it's more about patterns of thinking or behavior, CBT or ACT tools tend to come in early. If you're someone who relates to feeling "pulled in different directions" internally, IFS often resonates. These approaches can always adapt and change as the therapeutic relationship progresses. Ongoing sessions: Most sessions follow a rhythm of checking in on what's come up since we last met, then moving into whatever the working focus is that day. That might be co-analyzing a recent experience, learning and practicing a skill, working through an EMDR protocol, or just talking through something that needs space. I'll periodically check in on whether the pace and approach still feel right, rather than assuming what worked in week three still fits in week twelve. Between sessions: Depending on the approach we're using, I may suggest small things to notice or try between sessions, but I prioritize collaboration over directiveness. I care more about what works for you than any manualized approach. Couples: For couple work, sessions focus on communication patterns and the relationship dynamic, using family systems and attachment history to inform where we go.
