Getting to know Amelia Sonny

I believe people are capable of making their lives better and can take the necessary steps to do so. And you don’t have to do that alone. With my direct and collaborative approach, we can get you to the life you desire. Apart of utilizing systemic therapy and its interventions, I provide tools tailored to each client. Therapy is not a one size fits all. My biggest focus is building and maintaining a therapeutic alliance with my clients. With an additional 10 years of experience in behavioral therapy, we can build rapport and build an effective therapeutic alliance together. With a masters degree in marriage and family therapy, I am able to dig deeper into the root of issues, while addressing current symptoms.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I prioritize my client’s goals for therapy and their desires for the life they want to live. What you give in therapy is what you will get out of it. I utilize a collaborative approach with my clients while incorporating theories such as, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman Method, CBT, etc.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typical sessions include establishing and reviewing treatment goals, identifying areas for growth, and working toward those goals using evidence-based therapeutic approaches that best fit the client’s individual needs. Sessions also focus on helping clients develop practical skills, implement strategies between sessions, and remain accountable for their progress. When a client presents with symptoms that may indicate a mental health diagnosis, an appropriate clinical assessment will be completed. When clinically indicated, treatment will then be tailored to address the identified symptoms and underlying concerns, with the goal of improving functioning, reducing symptoms, and supporting the client’s long-term well-being.

Amelia has been a tremendous help to my wife and our marriage. She helped my wife work through past trauma, which has made a real difference in how we communicate and connect with each other. I’m not a kid. I was very scared to start therapy… but I did and and I was pleasantly surprised how well it went. Amelia helped me navigate some tough times and issues I have been putting on the back burner way too long . The best part was ( despite our age difference) we worked very well together. Amelia… thank you for listening… really listening.
Amelia was my first therapist and only therapist! Felt comfortable every session I had with her! Quick response whenever I needed to switch appointments!
We are so grateful to have found such a friendly and great couples therapist. From the very beginning, she created a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where we both felt heard and understood. She had a wonderful way of helping us communicate more effectively, understand each other’s perspectives, and work through difficult conversations in a productive way. Amelia was compassionate, patient, and truly invested in helping us strengthen our relationship.
