Amie Wells, LMHC

Amie Wells, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
I work with couples and partnerships affected by the psychological and emotional impacts of personal, generational, racial, or sexual traumas, as well as minority stress related to LGBTQIA and Non-Monogamy/Polyamory issues that may disrupt the bond, sense of safety, love, or connection within their romantic relationships. I provide therapeutic guidance and a supportive space for couples and romantic partnerships to process and heal from these adversities, aiming to strengthen their relationships and overall emotional wellness. I help couples develop the skills to engage in difficult conversations and build the confidence to continue these discussions outside of therapy. Alongside managing conflict and challenging discussions, we work together to create and reinforce relationship goals and agreements that secure the foundation of their connection. My professional background includes providing bilingual in-home and community-based intensive family therapy for diverse families with ?at risk/high risk? adolescents transitioning from inpatient psychiatric care, as well as children ages 4-18 who have experienced domestic violence or other forms of childhood abuse. Additionally, I have worked for several years at a large New York community-based organization, treating individuals and couples aged 12 to 77 with a range of mental health disorders and varying levels of severity. I hold a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Boston College and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. My passion is to empower clients to speak and live their truth, continue their healing journey, and cultivate healthier romantic relationships.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide psychotherapy through an affirmative, multicultural, strength-based and feminist framework. My style is warm, passionate, collaborative, and done through a multi-dimensional integration of research based therapeutic models and exercises. My practice and therapeutic approach is focused on the needs of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and Non-Monogamous/ Polyamourous Communities and the intersections of these identities in dominant social contexts. My style is to support clients by confronting and challenging limiting beliefs reflective of cis-heteronormative dominant culture, religious institutions, conventional family structures etc particularly when it restricts a clients self affirmation and hinders upon them achieving emotional wellbeing. During the assessment phase, I also support clients in naming their prominent identities that have shaped or influenced their life experience and worldview. This is done as a way to support clients in affirming their identity and highlighting the intersectionalities of their identities as they appear in their day-to-day life experiences, life challenges, values and core beliefs.
