Amy Thorson, LICSW

Psychotherapist
MN
Hi there, I'm Amy! My name is Amy Thorson, and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) based in Minnesota, working with clients statewide via telehealth. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from Simmons University. I work with adults individually and specialize in addictions, co-dependency, grief/loss, anxiety, depression, and trauma using Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. My approach My approach to therapy is individualized and adapts based on a client’s current and future needs. It can evolve throughout treatment if those needs change. I most frequently use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Relapse Prevention work. I also plan to incorporate Accelerated Resolution Therapy into my practice. Additionally, I use treatment assignments and therapeutic tools that clients can work on between sessions to optimize outcomes and help achieve their goals. My focus My therapeutic approach is a good fit for adults struggling with addiction, relationship stress, grief/loss, anxiety, depression, or trauma. These challenges can negatively impact relationships, employment, physical health, and mental health. I work with clients to identify areas they want to improve, ultimately helping them find balance and success across all eight dimensions of wellness. My communication style My communication style is interactive. I provide a positive and hopeful environment while actively listening to offer thoughtful responses and feedback throughout sessions. I believe therapy should be an active dialogue between therapist and client. My journey to mental healthcare I became a LADC because I believe people can and do recover from substance use. While working as a LADC, I quickly realized the importance of co-occurring treatment for substance use and mental health issues.
