Andra Niculescu, LMFT

Psychotherapist
95 Allens Creek Rd, Rochester, NY
I work with individuals and couples who find themselves having a difficult time adjusting to life transitions such as a child leaving home, divorce, caring for an elderly parent, or coping with a chronic illness. Asking for help is hard, but when clients come to me, I see the glimmer of hope that made them reach out. For some, therapy is about problem solving. For others, therapy offers the opportunity for self-discovery. I help you explore your feelings and thoughts, and these conversations will change the ways you relate to yourself and others. I specialize in working with couples. Are you in a relationship but feel alone? Is it like you are walking on eggshells all the time? Do you feel sad and unable to enjoy life as you used to? When couples enter therapy, they want to see change. Through our work together, I will help you rediscover your strengths, decrease your anxiety, and improve the way you relate to one another so you can enjoy your relationship more. I provide a safe, confidential, and supportive environment. I hold a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Rochester, which informs my approach and commitment to helping couples and individuals navigate their challenges with empathy and expertise.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach in working with individuals or couples is tailored to the clients individual needs.I am trained as a family systems therapist but I integrate attachment theory, modern analytic theory, psychoeducation, and cognitive behavioral therapy to help the clients create the changes they desire. When working with a couple usually start by meeting with both partners but I often follow with an individual session with each partner to be able to understand the situation from each perspective and asses individual needs in the context of the couple.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typically the intake session lasts 90 minutes and the goal is to start assessing the couples goals and readiness for change. the assessment continues for a couple more sessions but those last 50 minutes. I often offer a couples questionnaire as a diagnostic tool that each partner needs to fill out separately. I encourage honest communication between therapist and client that includes but is not limited to providing feedback about how our progress matches the goals and expectation for change
