Getting to know Anette Eriksson

I'm a New York State-Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a Master's in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University and postgraduate training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), a cognitive-behavioral approach. As my license is in New York, I only work with clients who are in New York State. All sessions are virtual.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is collaborative and interactive and sessions tend to have a conversational feel to them. I encourage clients to work on current problems, while simultaneously explore historic patterns. I asks questions and pose theories to help initiate thoughts and dialogue, and to better understand clients' challenges.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When analyzing problems through REBT, we identify a situation, or an activating event, about which the client gets upset. We look to see if there is a disturbed emotion such as anxiety or depression and/or a disruptive behavior such as procrastination and isolation. What we then always identify in REBT are the thoughts and beliefs the client has about the problem situation, or activating event. The philosophy of REBT is that there are certain beliefs that leads to disturbed emotions and dysfunctional behaviors, while there are other more rational beliefs that leads to non-disturbed emotions and functional behaviors. We examine and challenge the unhelpful irrational beliefs to help the client gain a healthier perspective. Once a healthier perspective is gained, emotions and behaviors follow suit and problem solving tends to get easier.
