Angela Tamayo, LCSW

Angela Tamayo, LCSW

Psychotherapist
TN
I work with teens and adults who struggle with anxiety, overthinking, people-pleasing, self-doubt, perfectionistic tendencies, relationship stress, and difficulty setting boundaries. Many of my clients feel like they are holding everything together on the outside while feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or exhausted inside. I also enjoy supporting immigrants, children of immigrants, and bicultural clients as they navigate family expectations, cultural pressure, identity, belonging, and staying connected to their culture while building a life that feels true to them. My approach is warm, honest, practical, and culturally sensitive. I strive to create a space where clients feel heard, supported, and met with compassion rather than judgment.

Getting to know Angela Tamayo

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is collaborative, warm, and practical. I want clients to feel safe being honest about what they are experiencing while also feeling supported in making real changes in their lives. I understand that therapy can feel vulnerable, especially when you are used to being the strong one, keeping things inside, or taking care of everyone else. In our work together, we may focus on understanding your emotions, calming anxiety, challenging negative self-talk, building healthier boundaries, improving communication, and strengthening self-trust. I often use CBT, DBT skills, ACT, family systems, narrative therapy, grounding tools, exposure strategies, and inner-child or parts work depending on your needs and goals. My goal is to help you better understand yourself, feel more connected, and move toward a life that feels more peaceful, confident, and authentic.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first session, we will spend time getting to know you, what brings you to therapy, and what you hope will feel different. I may ask about your symptoms, stressors, relationships, family background, coping skills, strengths, and goals for therapy. We will move at a pace that feels supportive while also beginning to identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Ongoing sessions may include processing current stressors, exploring past experiences that still affect you, learning practical coping skills, practicing boundaries and communication, challenging anxious or perfectionistic thoughts, and building more self-compassion. For teens, I also consider family dynamics, school stress, identity development, emotional regulation, and support systems. Therapy with me is not one-size-fits-all. Together, we will create a plan that fits your needs, culture, values, and goals.
