Anquinette Wiggins, LPCMH

Psychotherapist
DE
I am a client-centered therapist, meaning I believe each client comes to this process with a unique experience and way of being in the world. As such, I have a holistic approach to counseling, pulling from many theories and modalities, but predominately focused on integrating the best of psychodynamic theory (helping my client see and understand their patterns of emotions, thoughts and behaviors) with cognitive behavioral theory (solution-focused methods) and systems theory (how one exists in the larger world) to create lasting, character-logical change. I enjoy working with clients who are seeking support to heal from unresolved trauma; mend family and other relational conflicts; manage depression, anxiety, and ADHD challenges; navigate life/career cycle issues; overcome caregiver/compassion fatigue and grief. I recognize and respect the courage it takes to embark upon a journey to emotional wellness, and I am humbled and honored to bear witness to your walk.

Getting to know Anquinette Wiggins

I am a client-centered therapist, meaning I believe each client comes to this process with a unique experience and way of being in the world. As such, I have a holistic approach to counseling, pulling from many theories and modalities, but predominately focused on integrating the best of psychodynamic theory (helping my client see and understand their patterns of emotions, thoughts and behaviors) with cognitive behavioral theory (solution-focused methods) and systems theory (how one exists in the larger world) to create lasting, character-logical change. What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a deep, active listener. I encourage my clients to "just start sharing" whatever is pertinent to them in the moment, as I believe the "themes" of your concerns are present in everything you do and relieve themselves to us both, no matter what you talk about. Counseling is my second career. Growing up, I wanted to be either a psychologist or an actor, professions considered by my family and community to be poor choices for a young, Black woman. They believed that neither would make money because "Black people don’t do therapy — we go to church!" and "Acting was a hobby, not a real job!" So, I went into banking instead and enjoyed a pretty successful 26-year stint in corporate America. When stress as a BIPOC member in a white-dominated world got the best of me, I sought my own therapist. After overcoming the challenges of stigma and seeking to enter into care with a provider who "looked like me," only to fail, I decided I would become one myself…...and I did!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

It is important to me that you, the client, identify what you want to work on. We will refine your goals accordingly, as you gain more awareness into what changes you wish to actively work on -- everything you discover is important, but some things have more priority than others, and helping you determine is paramount to you achieving your goals successfully. Our first session is like the interview process on a first date - it will be an opportunity for us to get to know one another, with you sharing "what you're looking for and why" and me sharing what I understand about what want in this relationship and telling you how I'd "show up " to support you. Then we'd discuss whether it feels like our understanding matches and whether we should proceed or not. Therapy is a process, and it begins with finding the right "therapeutic relationship fit".
