How do we explain the Asian American experience? Some of our parents had to swim, travel by boat, and stay in refugee camps in order to make a new life here. Some of our parents had to start from scratch, finding jobs and learning one of the most complex languages in the world. Some of us grew up with an over-emphasis in education, corporal punishment, and a much more blunted form of emotional attachment. Some of us were able to do well in school, get a good job, and support the myth that as Asians, we are smart and successful. Yet, that also comes with challenges that we have been taught to either ignore or face alone. I remember those challenges. I grew up with an inferiority complex because I could never do as well as my other Asian peers with my “B” average grades. I was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for three years just before reaching high school. I struggled with trying to be direct as an American but respectful as an Asian with my parents. I could barely even speak Cantonese and I felt embarrassment each time I was around my peers or their parents. It took time but I was able to overcome these personal barriers. We can confront your barriers together. If you are struggling with the model minority stereotype, we can challenge and reframe it. If it is intergenerational trauma, we can process it and figure out how to embrace what you have been through while focusing on the future. If it is a cultural clash between you and your parents/grandparents, we can find a healthy medium. If you are trying to figure out your own bi-cultural identity, we can figure it out together. I am not trying to make you more American or more Asian. I am trying to help you become the best you and bring out the best of both worlds. What should a new client know about working with you?

Clinically, I conceptualize, provide coping skills, and create treatment plans primarily from a cognitive behavioral therapy approach. I believe that from an individual's childhood experiences, one inevitably creates core beliefs that influence one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. In my sessions, I use a strength-based and interpersonal approach in helping clients achieve their goals. I have worked with domestic violence survivors, high school students, patients in psychiatric wards, parolees, and inmates. I have seen the most vulnerable people still find the resiliency to continue to grow.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

NOTES: - In addition to individual therapy, I also offer psychological testing (ADHD, autism, memory, mood, personality, and others). - I specialize in Asian American Intergenerational Trauma and Asian American culture
