“She is a GEM I tell you. If home was a person it would be her, I’m only about to be on my 3rd session with her and she is so polite, compassionate and makes me laugh. Those are things I needed SO badly and I hear horror stories about how people switch therapists all the time and they never find a right fit. Well I’m so happy I got it right the 1st time choosing Ms.April, she is a breathe of fresh air in a room full of ??. Love her energy and her honesty she is amazing!”

Getting to know April Harvin

I am a therapist and coach with over 20 years of experience and training working effectively with adolescents, adults, families, young professionals, and groups. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Marywood University. My healing practice addresses issues inclusive of depression and anxiety, trauma, oppression, addiction and recovery, parent-child conflict, emotional/behavioral disruptions, life and career transitions, gender, sexuality, and spirituality. My therapeutic approach can be described as eclectic, as I utilize various theories and techniques such as Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral, Dialectical Behavioral, Attachment, Person Centered, Relational, and Expressive Arts therapies to address each person's unique needs, style, and life circumstance. A key foundation of my practice is building resilience. Let's build together by connecting today!

What should a new client know about working with you?

When I work with someone, I strive to honor a person's wholeness of being, which includes acknowledging one's body, mind, and spirit connection, identity (personal, and social), and lived experience. My practice foundations are built on the concepts of being an ally and developing myself as an anti-oppressive and racist therapist, In other words as my mentor describes as a " liberation therapist." I utilize multiple modalities, inclusive of trauma-focused, psychodynamic, expressive arts, Dialectical, and cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness, approaches, and techniques. At your first visit, we will explore your strengths, concerns, history, and current symptoms, as well as your experience with therapy, goals and your desired outcomes. Throughout our work together, I seek to co-create a therapeutic relationship with you where we are both experts and the outcomes reflect your hopes and desires for a healthier, more, balanced, empowered and fulfilling life. A life that reflects what Nelson Mandela advised, that "May your choices reflect your hopes rather than your fears."

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer individual, couples, and Group therapy. I am adding two new virtual groups for adults in September 2025: Surviving Black Grief: Loss and Bereavement group for Black Folks This is a 6-session group designed to provide support, understanding, and coping skills for Black Identified persons navigating the journey of loss, grief, and bereavement. The Black grief experience is unique as Black People experience higher rates of death, which is compounded by the grief and loss from centuries of racism, oppression, and trauma. Rooted in the cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage of Black Folks from around the world, this group offers a nurturing environment where individuals can express their emotions, share their stories, and find comfort in community. Storytelling, music, art, and spirituality will also be included as sources of strength and inspiration on this healing journey. Members will be encouraged to honor their loved ones, explore their emotions, and discover their path toward healing and resilience. Group will meet on Wednesdays, 6 - 7:30 PM, starting September 24, 2025. Africana Resiliency Huddle. A 12-session virtual interpersonal process group for Black Identified adults addressing the interaction of emotional distress, depression, and anxiety with racial, cultural, and historical trauma, to foster resilience, strengthen interpersonal connections, and enhance coping skills. The Fall Cycle will run from September through December 2025. This group will meet on Thursday, 6 - 7:30 pm, starting September 25, 2025. For both groups, the registration deadline is September 21, 2025; some insurances are accepted, and a sliding scale fee is available.
