Getting to know Ariel Shumaker-Hammond

I have a passion for working with couples and individuals moving through new stages of their lives (the journey to becoming a parent, or leaving a relationship, for example), with adolescents and young parents, with couples, and with folks going through a difficult transition. I am well versed in helping couples navigate conflict, discernment, recovery from betrayal, affairs and infidelity, as well as supporting them in navigating separation, divorce and coparenting. I also specialize in reproductive health, including infertility, perinatal and mood anxiety, and loss. My identity is informed by so much, but includes being the granddaughter of Eastern European immigrants, being a 9th generation farmer's daughter, by my creativity as a photographer, and by the mountains I live in. At this stage of my life, being a mother and raising my children in a liberated and race conscious ways is a huge focus of my identity.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I love helping people navigate life's challenges and transitions, in a warm and compassionate, but also directive way. I use a variety of modalities formed from over 20 years of training and experience, including emotionally focused therapy (EFT), Gottman, Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, CBT, and others. I am actively anti-racist and anti-oppressive, in both my personal and work life, and am comfortable with and have experience working with BIPOC folks, including holding space for and talking about race/racial trauma. I also have experience with and am comfortable supporting folks of any gender expression, and with the LGBTQI community. In addition, I identify as neurodivergent (ADHD) and have lots of experience working with neurodivergence.
