What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas with three years of independent clinical experience and over ten years of experience in human services, case management, vocational rehabilitation services, and working at inpatient and outpatient clinical therapy offices. I have a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Ohio University, a masters degree in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a bachelors of science degree in psychology from North Carolina State University. I chose to get a PhD in counseling because of my desire to help others, and my continuous drive to learn and grow. Therapy was essential to me as a teenager, then as a young adult, and now as a middle-aged adult. The most rewarding aspect of my work is to see the people I work with improve their overall thoughts and feelings. I have always found it to be a powerful tool in allowing me to process my thoughts and feelings, both about my past and my future. As a result, I chose to become a therapist, to provide the same support and guidance to the people I work with!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I initially gather information by talking with you to understand your situation the best we can. Based on what information we gather, we then develop a plan of action or assign a treatment plan of what we should work through to ensure you gain the best out of the therapy process. The therapeutic alliance is essential in our work together. If you and I both feel as if we are a strong team, the therapy is going to be the most effective. This is usually when there are the best outcomes in therapy, when the therapeutic alliance is strong. Based on the your presenting problem, treatment could take months to years but persistence and consistency is the key based on how severe your problems are. Don't give up on the process and stay consistent! The therapist-client alliance is unlike any other alliance and it is fun, rewarding work when you are committed to the process!
