Getting to know Ashley Vega

I am a Mental Health Counseling Graduate Intern at Doria Therapeutic Group, PLLC, completing a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mental Health Counseling at Alfred University. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from SUNY Cortland and my Master of Science in Education in School Counseling from Hunter College. I am a New York State Permanently Certified School Counselor. I bring five years of experience as a school counselor, where I have supported children and families with concerns related to anxiety, self-esteem, emotional regulation, peer relationships, communication, and challenges at school and home. My experience has given me a foundation in collaborating with families, educators, and other professionals to provide consistent and coordinated support. My counseling style is warm, individualized, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I believe effective therapy begins with taking the time to understand each person’s experiences, strengths, needs, and goals. I use a solution-focused and strengths-based approach to help clients identify practical coping strategies, build confidence, improve communication, and better understand the patterns that may be affecting their relationships and overall well-being. I am especially interested in working with young adults, adults, couples, and families experiencing anxiety, relationship concerns, communication difficulties, and life transitions. I have an interest in helping clients explore relationship dynamics and understand how individual experiences, personalities, needs, and communication styles can influence their connections with others. I value authenticity in the therapeutic relationship and strive to create a welcoming space where clients feel comfortable being themselves. When appropriate, I also believe humor can help foster connection and make therapy feel more natural and approachable.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients can expect me to be warm, approachable, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I believe therapy should feel like a supportive partnership where you have space to be yourself, talk openly about what you are experiencing, and feel genuinely heard and understood. My approach is individualized, strengths-based, and solution-focused. I take time to understand your experiences, needs, relationships, and goals so that our work feels relevant and practical. Depending on what you are working through, we may focus on building coping skills, improving communication, strengthening self-esteem, managing anxiety, navigating life transitions, or better understanding patterns within your relationships. I also value authenticity in the therapeutic relationship and believe that, when appropriate, humor can help create comfort and connection. My goal is to provide a space where you feel supported while also helping you develop greater self-awareness, confidence, and practical strategies you can use in your everyday life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During our first few sessions, I focus on getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and learning about your experiences, strengths, relationships, and goals. Together, we will identify the areas you would like to work on and develop a plan that feels practical and meaningful to you. A typical session may include checking in on how you have been feeling, discussing recent experiences or challenges, exploring thoughts and emotions, and identifying patterns that may be affecting your well-being or relationships. Depending on your needs, we may also work on coping strategies, communication skills, emotional regulation, problem-solving, or ways to manage anxiety and life transitions. I take a collaborative and solution-focused approach, so sessions are tailored to what feels most helpful while keeping your overall goals in mind. As we work together, we will regularly review your progress, build on your strengths, and adjust our approach as your needs evolve.
