Getting to know Atavia Whitfield

I am a Licensed Social Worker with more than 15 years of experience in social work and behavioral health. I earned my Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) from Columbia University School of Social Work in 2011 and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Grinnell College in 2006. Throughout my career, I have worked with youth, young adults, adults, and older adults in a variety of clinical settings, including outpatient mental health clinics, inpatient facilities, high schools, after-school programs, and home-based environments. I provide individual therapy, biopsychosocial assessments, treatment planning, and crisis support. I often work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, trauma-related concerns, emotional regulation challenges, academic or workplace stress, and relationship difficulties.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and trauma-informed. I integrate evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and DBT-informed skills. I focus on helping clients build self-awareness, develop effective coping strategies, and learn practical tools they can use outside of therapy to manage life’s challenges. I am passionate about helping individuals gain clarity, build resilience, and create meaningful change in their lives. I strive to create a calm and respectful space where clients feel heard, supported, and empowered to grow. In our work together, we may explore current stressors, patterns that contribute to emotional distress, and relevant past experiences, while also focusing on practical skill-building and future goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

You will start with completing an initial phone consultation with one of Dayrise Wellness' care coordinators and from there, they will schedule the initial assessment. The phone consultation helps me get some background information before we dive into a full assessment to ensure we are a good therapeutic match. If we are not, our team will find an available therapist who does match your needs! All sessions are typically 60 minutes!

Most relevant

The called me the time of the appointment to tell me they made a mistake and forgot to call me even though I took of work. Then told me my insurance was not accepted after I uploaded pictures. Then the woman said I should’ve known because it’s not ppo as if I’m supposed to know what that means.
