Life has a way of shaking your sense of self loose — your confidence, your direction, your relationships, even your sense of who you are. Whether you're working through a divorce, facing anxiety that won't ease up, or just feeling disconnected from yourself, finding solid ground can feel out of reach. It isn't. Sometimes it just takes the right person in your corner. That's been Barb Spall's work throughout her career — first as a licensed school counselor guiding middle schoolers through difficult, formative years, and now as a therapist for teens, young adults, and adults. Her school background taught her to meet people where they are and put even guarded clients at ease. Barb offers individual and couples counseling at the Naperville and Lemont offices, working with anxiety, major life transitions, relationship challenges, divorce, low self-esteem, and women's issues. She holds a Master's in Counseling from National-Louis University, with two years of clinical experience alongside her school-based work, including running self-esteem groups for girls — a thread that runs through her practice today. She draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxious or negative thinking, Motivational Interviewing to help clients reconnect with direction, and Solution-Focused, Strengths-Based approaches to reveal the resilience clients already have. Her style is warm and humanistic, grounded in empathy — with room for humor along the way. Barb especially loves working with people who feel like strangers to themselves. Her goal isn't just coping — it's helping clients reconnect with their strengths and move forward with clarity. As she puts it: "I have a 100% success rate of making it through everything in my life so far — the good and the bad — and I want to help you make it through too." Outside work, Barb enjoys family time, movies, and Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney concerts. She's also a dedicated walker, currently on a 700-day streak and counting.

What should a new client know about working with you?

What I want you to know most is that you don't need to have things figured out before you walk in the door. My time as a school counselor, working with middle schoolers through some genuinely difficult years, taught me how to meet people exactly where they are and pick up on what's going on beneath the surface — even when someone can't quite put it into words yet. That's the foundation I bring to every relationship, whether I'm working with a teen, a young adult, or an adult. My style is warm and humanistic, and I lean into empathy first. I also believe healing doesn't have to feel heavy every step of the way, so don't be surprised if there's humor in our sessions — I think it makes the harder moments more bearable. I'm especially drawn to working with people who feel like they've lost touch with themselves, who aren't sure who they are anymore or where they're headed. My hope is that you leave our work together not just having coped, but having genuinely reconnected with your own strengths. As I tell clients: I have a 100% success rate of making it through everything in my life so far — the good and the bad — and I want to help you make it through too.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer both individual and couples counseling, and the specific issues I work with run the gamut — anxiety, major life transitions, relationship difficulties, divorce, low self-esteem, and women's issues among them. Because of that range, my process isn't one-size-fits-all; I pull from a few different approaches depending on what's actually happening for you. If anxious or negative thought patterns are at the center of things, I'll bring in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help work through them directly. If you're feeling stuck or disconnected from your own goals, I use Motivational Interviewing to help you reconnect with your sense of direction. And across the board, I rely on Solution-Focused and Strengths-Based strategies — I find that most people are carrying more resilience than they realize, and part of my job is helping you actually see it. Sessions build over time rather than following a rigid script. We'll spend early sessions establishing trust and understanding the full picture, then move into more targeted work using whichever of these approaches fits what you're navigating. The through line is always the same: helping you move forward with real clarity, not just get through the moment in front of you.
