Getting to know Barry Tan

Hi there, I'm Barry! I am a licensed clinical counselor who believes that everyone has to be the force of change they want to be. I look forward to working with anybody who wants to learn about themselves in a safe environment free from judgment. I specialize in working with people dealing with substance use, with or without mental health issues. I have a background in working with people both inpatient and outpatient, the homeless population, and people in the justice system. I also address career concerns, stress over life decisions, relationships, boundaries, and healthy habits for overall wellness. I want to help you achieve your goals whether you have an idea of what they are or just want to learn about them as we go through this journey together. My approach My style is primarily based on motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and strengths-based models. My focus I work well with people who are open with me as they are with themselves. We can walk this journey together, and building trust is the first step on that journey. My communication style I am generally frank and open with my clients. My emphasis is hearing what you have to say, and I will ask you further questions here and there, but hearing you out first helps me understand you better and help you better. My journey to therapy Wanting to understand people drew me to therapy. Learning about how people navigate through life and walking with them through this journey made me realize this is the career I want. I earned my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and am a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC). My goals for you Any goals we set are not permanent, and just as life evolves, our goals evolve with time. Successful care is going to be a continued conversation that either you or I can initiate. If either of us feels sufficient progress, we can talk about ending therapy.
