Baruch Gubnitsky, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I provide psychotherapy to adolescents, young adults, and adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, attention difficulties, emotional dysregulation, relationship stress, and challenges adjusting to life changes. Many of my clients feel overwhelmed, emotionally stuck, or frustrated by patterns that continue to affect their relationships, school, work, or daily functioning. My approach is supportive, practical, and goal-oriented. I use evidence-based treatment methods, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy skills, trauma-informed interventions, behavioral strategies, and solution-focused techniques. Treatment is individualized according to each client’s needs, strengths, cultural background, and personal goals. I help clients better understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while developing practical skills that can be used outside of therapy. Depending on the client’s needs, treatment may focus on managing anxiety, improving emotional regulation, strengthening communication, increasing motivation, developing healthier routines, processing difficult experiences, and improving overall functioning. When working with adolescents, I recognize the importance of family involvement while also creating a respectful and confidential space where the young person can feel heard. Parent guidance and family sessions may be incorporated when clinically appropriate. I speak English, Russian, and Hebrew and welcome clients from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Therapy is provided through secure telehealth sessions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is collaborative, structured, and focused on meaningful change. I provide a supportive environment where clients can speak openly without judgment, while also receiving honest feedback, practical guidance, and clear direction. Therapy is not limited to discussing problems. We work together to understand the patterns contributing to distress and to develop healthier ways of responding. Sessions may include identifying unhelpful thoughts, practicing emotional regulation skills, improving communication, addressing avoidance, strengthening coping strategies, and developing practical steps toward the client’s goals. I understand that beginning therapy can feel uncomfortable, especially for someone who is unsure what to expect or has had a disappointing experience with treatment in the past. I take time to understand each client’s concerns, establish trust, and create a treatment approach that feels both manageable and purposeful. I encourage clients to participate actively in the therapy process. This may include practicing skills between sessions, monitoring symptoms, trying new responses, or reflecting on patterns discussed during treatment. Progress does not require perfection, but it does require consistency, openness, and a willingness to consider new approaches. My style is engaged, respectful, and direct. I will support you while also helping you challenge patterns that may be interfering with your emotional well-being, relationships, or daily functioning.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Treatment generally begins with an initial assessment. During the first sessions, I gather information about the client’s current concerns, symptoms, relationships, daily functioning, treatment history, strengths, and goals. We also discuss what the client hopes to gain from therapy and identify the areas that should receive the greatest attention. After the assessment, we develop a treatment plan with clear and realistic goals. Therapy is individualized, but sessions typically include a review of recent concerns, discussion of specific situations or emotional patterns, and work on practical strategies that can be applied in daily life. Depending on the client’s needs, treatment may include cognitive restructuring, behavioral interventions, mindfulness and distress-tolerance skills, problem-solving, communication training, trauma-informed work, parent guidance, or family involvement. When working with adolescents, I balance the young person’s need for privacy with appropriate caregiver participation and communication. I regularly review progress with clients and adjust the treatment approach when necessary. If a strategy is not helping, we examine why and consider a different intervention rather than continuing without direction. Sessions are usually scheduled weekly to support consistency and therapeutic momentum. The overall goal is to help clients better understand themselves, manage symptoms more effectively, improve relationships, and develop skills that remain useful after therapy has ended.
