Dr. Benjamin Sandler, PsyD

Dr. Benjamin Sandler, PsyD

Psychotherapist
CA
I specialize in helping adults living with chronic pain or chronic illness who are ready for a different approach-one that's compassionate, evidence-based, and grounded in the mind-body connection. My clients are often high-functioning individuals who feel stuck, frustrated, and exhausted from navigating years of pain, medical appointments, and treatments that haven't delivered lasting relief. In our work together, we go beyond symptom management. I help clients understand the neuroscience of pain, explore the emotional and psychological layers that influence it, and build tools to calm the nervous system, shift unhelpful patterns, and reconnect with what matters most. Whether you're dealing with fibromyalgia, back pain, headaches, autoimmune issues, or another chronic condition, our work is collaborative and tailored to you. I draw from Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), psychodynamic and relational approaches, somatic awareness, CBT/ACT when appropriate, and a strong foundation of trauma-informed care. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, which informs my integrative and compassionate approach. I aim to create a space where clients feel safe, understood, and empowered to make real changes-not through toxic positivity or quick fixes, but through meaningful, supported work. If you're ready to take your next step toward healing, I'd be honored to be part of your journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is collaborative, supportive, and grounded in the belief that chronic pain is real—and that change is possible. I bring a mix of warmth, honesty, and evidence-based strategies to help you better understand your pain, break out of fear-avoidance cycles, and reconnect with the parts of life pain may have pulled you away from. I won’t just sit back and nod—I’m active in the process. I’ll help you explore the emotional, psychological, and neurological layers of your experience and offer practical tools you can use in daily life. My approach blends Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), psychodynamic and relational work, somatic awareness, and selected elements of CBT and ACT when helpful. I always tailor the work to your unique story, needs, and nervous system. Clients often tell me they feel both challenged and deeply supported in our sessions. This is a space where we can talk honestly about what’s hard, without judgment, and start building a path forward based on self-compassion, science, and a renewed sense of possibility.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together begins with a comprehensive intake where I’ll learn about your pain history, medical background, lifestyle, and how chronic pain is impacting your day-to-day life. I’ll also introduce you to the science behind the mind-body connection and how therapy can help calm the nervous system and rewire pain pathways over time. After the first few sessions, we’ll move into focused work based on your goals. Sessions typically include a mix of reflective conversation, guided mind-body practices, education about the pain system, and tools you can apply between sessions. You’ll gain skills to reduce fear and anxiety around pain, shift stuck patterns, and reconnect with movement, joy, and purpose—even if pain is still present. I don’t follow a rigid protocol—we’ll collaborate on what’s most helpful for you. Whether we’re working with pain reprocessing, exploring emotional contributors, or practicing nervous system regulation, my goal is to help you feel more empowered, less afraid, and more connected to your life.
