Getting to know Dr. Beverly Sargent

I am a Pastoral Therapist who believes in the power of play! Through the use of play and sand, people of all ages can reconnect with mind, body, spirit, and soul; gaining a deeper understanding of life's experiences and, with time and effort, find a place of peace, hope, and healing. My passion is working with children, tweens, and teens! However, we recognize that our young clients’ concerns are often intertwined with family dynamics. Our goal is to work with the family, both individually and collectively, as needed. We also support people of all ages who are grieving or dealing with depression, anger, and abuse. I hold a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and a Master’s in Pastoral Counseling, both from Loyola University Maryland. I am also honorably retired from the United States Armed Forces.

What should a new client know about working with you?

All sessions are virtual. The first session involves a discussion of counseling policies and answering any questions you and/or your family may have. It is also an opportunity for us to get to know each other. Sharing your goals for treatment is crucial; helping me to help you reach those goals. I believe that introducing deep breathing and other mindfulness techniques is extremely important as well. Integrating mindfulness and self-care activities helps us feel better and maintain our wellness journey. Most of the work happens between sessions; through reflection, contemplation and home activities inspired by our chats. I tend to encourage at least one home activity following each session. I look forward to meeting, chatting, working and "walking" with you and/or your family along your journey of health, hope, and peace.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

All therapy is virtual. Most of my parents are finding virtual therapy to be convenient; a saving of time and travel. I use directive forms play therapy with younger clients, age 2-10. I use mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy with most others. When needed, I integrate art, books and videos as well.
