“Bingwan is a wonderful therapist, and a great fit for me. In our sessions, I feel embraced, nourished, and challenged in the ways that I need. She provides a good mixture of listening and analyzing - which is something I have struggled to find with other therapists. Bingwan is keen, gentle, thoughtful, and firm. She has clearly dedicated herself to attuning to whatever might arise in a given moment. I met Bingwan at a time just before my life changed dramatically. Our work together has made it possible to traverse such sudden shifts with better awareness and support. She's helped me to feel my emotions from a place of curiosity and love. I very much recommend working with her.”

Getting to know Bingwan Liu

I'm a licensed clinical social worker, a certified field instructor, and a supervising psychotherapist based in New York City. I work one-on-one with individuals seeking support to navigate emotional pain and those interested in exploring their inner world for self-understanding and personal growth. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University in 2014. Since then, I have treated patients facing a variety of mental health challenges. I currently accept patients in New York State through both online and in-person therapy. My areas of expertise include: - Depression - Anxiety - Developmental traumas - Trans-cultural and racial-related issues - Dating and relationships - Emerging adulthood - Self-esteem, self-reflection, and growth

What should a new client know about working with you?

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO WORK WITH ME? Though each person experiences me differently based on their unique personality, you'll likely find me empathic, intuitive, and transparent with my thoughts. When we work together, you're entering an open, curious space. We'll start with whichever thoughts, feelings, memories, imaginations, dreams, sensations, and behaviors you want to discuss. While listening to you, I use my theoretical framework and moment-to-moment experiences to guide our process. I compare the work to being on a journey of exploring your psychological landscape together. You'll let us wander your inner world to the degree you feel comfortable. I'll do my best to help you understand what we encounter and experience. It's a collaborative, creative process. If you want to know my theoretical framework, I use an integrative approach informed by Jungian analysis/depth psychology, psychodynamic therapy, and somatic experiencing. Rather than viewing mental health symptoms as the problem, I regard them as a path into your wondrous internal world. The more you explore and become familiar with your psyche and personality, the better you can navigate your inner and outer worlds. Even though life will not become easier, the understanding you gain in our work allows you to make choices that work best for you. To be at your service the best I can, I'm continuously furthering my understanding of our psychology. These efforts include studying one-on-one with highly experienced psychoanalysts, training in Somatic Experiencing, and receiving my analysis. My Zen practice strengthens my capacity to hold an observing and sensitive mental space for our work, an essential element for reflective processes. I'm bilingual in English (second language, IELTS level 8 "very good user") and Mandarin (native speaker).

When I first started speaking to Bingwan,I didn't know what to expect but she has exceeded my expectations.Speaking to her has honestly helped me so much.I feel as though she is very understanding while also firm during sessions. She is very warm and thorough when discussing serious matters .She listens and is never distracted while I am speaking.I think she is very skilled at what she does and would recommend her to anyone who needs support! She is one of the best and I appreciate her deeply.
My therapy goals and areas of growth have shifted with different phases of my life, but my work with Bingwan is truly guiding me to the heart of my thoughts, feelings and motivations that make up who I am. As someone prone to black and white thinking, I always want the “answers.” Bingwan challenges me to explore the possibilities of embracing the gray. Her observations come in the form of questions for us to explore together. She is patient but knows then to push me, and honest without being too blunt or too sugar-coated. Bingwan is professional and highly intelligent, but also easygoing and approachable. I feel comfortable sharing parts of myself with her that I’ve never explored with other therapists. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Bingwan to both experienced and new therapy clients. She meets you where you are and dedicates her talents to gently guide you closer to where you want to be. I am proud of the growth I have achieved so far in our year together and am excited to curiously navigate what’s on my mind with Bingwan every week.
Bingwan is thorough, compassionate and insightful. I’ve been working with her for over 2 years since the pandemic started. She’s helping me so much! I recommend her to anyone who wants to understand what’s bothering them deep down and work through those stuff.
