Ideal client is one who is able to trust the problem solving process and is motivated to find solutions not tried previously nor even thought of previously sometimes. One who can appreciate that one's greatest vulnerability can become one's strength in many ways. An ideal client , not that there is one (it's ideal, not real) is one who can accept support and that "two heads are better than one" at times. A client who can see that this Provider has much compassion and empathy which sets the therapy "stage" for the trust that is needed to engage and solve problems. The old cliche is still true: If you can name it (the problem) then you can claim it" which means one owns the problems and then can better able decide best solution for oneself. As a clinician I think it is important and vital to be able to set a client at ease, suggest resources if needed and support and educate the client when needed and appropriate. Part of this process is to determine the best resources with the client. (eg. If client loves music then accessing musical lyrics and/or songs to assist in the therapy process at times); using what the client knows and is most comfortable engaging in conversations that will help with the problem solving process. (eg. A 10 year old boy who could not allow himself feelings to grieve the death of a parent so this Provider talked to him about a Harry Potter book in which the ghosts stole a kids feelings and energy.) This freed the boy to feel, cry and grieve because the analogy was so fitting to his circumstances. This requires clinicians to stay current in literature, music, current events and many other's interests to assist in a dialogue and problem solving.
