Bonnie Kim, LCPC

Psychotherapist
IL
Born in Korea and rooted in North America, she has also lived and worked overseas during her formative professional years. These crosscultural experiences have given her a deep sense of appreciation for both differences and the shared human experiences. This perspective deeply informs her therapeutic relationships, helping clients feel seen, heard, supported, and empowered wherever they are in their walk of life. Bonnie is passionate about helping her clients blossom into the fullness of who they are meant to be. She sees each person as God’s beautiful creation; wholesome and precious yet carrying some wounds and brokenness as all humans do. Her clients often notice her natural gift of attunement early on, and they appreciate her gentle presence as she walks alongside them in their healing journey. Bonnie believes all human beings are shaped by their past, good and bad, yet their past doesn’t determine who they will become. With a culturally attuned, spiritually sensitive, and client-centered approach, she creates a safe, supportive space where her clients find their journey truly inspiring and transformative, empowering them to write their own authentic, beautiful stories. She provides individual, couple, and group counseling. She especially enjoys working with young adults and older adults as they navigate major life transitions. Her areas of specialty include: Emotional Agility (navigating everyday emotions such as sadness, anger, and joy) Mood Disorders (including depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder) Relationship Issues (premarital, couples, family, dating, and friendships) Personal Healing (providing care for OCD, ADHD, trauma (both big and small), and unresolved emotional wounds from the past) Life Challenges (grief, shame, stress, transitions, self-worth, conflict resolution, and family of origin issues, particularly for those experiencing cultural and generational tensions within family relationships)

What should a new client know about working with you?

Bonnie’s therapeutic style is gentle, warm, and grounded, yet bold when needed. She integrates clinical expertise with spiritual vitality to help her clients move toward a brighter tomorrow because she truly believes that healing is possible. So do not let your fear hold you back. Just reach out, and she will be right there to journey with you!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My first session with a new client is less about gathering information and more about building a foundation. I want to understand what brought you in, what you have already tried, and what you hope will be different. I listen not just for the presenting concern but for what is underneath it, the patterns, the history, and the parts of your story you may not have said out loud before. From there, early sessions tend to focus on creating enough safety and clarity to do real work. For many of the clients I see, that means slowing down enough to examine what has been running quietly in the background, whether that is anxiety, grief, old relational wounds, or the particular exhaustion that comes from holding two cultures or two versions of yourself at once. As we build that foundation, sessions become more focused and active. I draw on a client-centered, culturally attuned approach and integrate clinical tools based on each person's actual needs. I am warm and unhurried, but I am also willing to be direct when the moment calls for it. Progress in therapy is not always linear, and I will name that openly so you are never left wondering if something is wrong. I check in regularly about how the work is landing. If something is not resonating, I want to know. This is a collaborative process, and your feedback shapes where we go. All of my sessions are conducted via telehealth, which means you can access care from anywhere in Illinois, on your schedule, in a space where you feel comfortable.

More information on payments and coverage

I am in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, and UnitedHealthcare PPO plans. If you have one of these plans, your insurance may cover a significant portion of your sessions. I encourage you to contact your insurance provider ahead of time to understand your specific benefits, copays, and any deductible that may apply. Once you book your appointment, you will receive a call from Dr. Luis San Roman or from me to answer any questions you have and to walk you through the intake forms you will need to complete before your first session. That call is also a great opportunity to ask anything about coverage, fees, or what to expect. Please note that keeping your scheduled appointment is an important part of the therapeutic process. Consistency matters, especially early in the work, and I ask that clients honor their commitment to the time we have set aside together. If you need to reschedule, please do so as early as possible so we can find another time that works. If you have questions about payment or coverage that are not answered here, do not hesitate to reach out before booking. I want the practical side of starting therapy to feel as straightforward as possible so you can focus on what matters most.
