Brian Hayes, MA

Psychotherapist
2307 Shelby Ave, Ann Arbor, MI
All consultations are conducted by phone. Most consults are scheduled in the morning, but if you need something outside what’s listed, call or text my office at 734‑306‑2289. I built this practice for men who want a place to talk honestly without having to hold everything together. Most of the men I work with look steady on the outside but feel worn down or stretched thin on the inside. Therapy here is a private, steady space to sort through what’s been going on and understand yourself with more clarity. My approach is grounded and relational. I pay close attention to the patterns that shape how you cope, connect, and respond under pressure. The goal isn’t to fix you or push you toward an ideal. It’s to help you understand what’s driving your reactions so you can move through your life with more steadiness and honesty. I’m a Limited License Psychologist in Ann Arbor with advanced training in contemporary psychotherapy and men’s mental health. I’ve spent my career working with men across different stages of life. Like young men figuring out who they’re becoming, and men in midlife carrying long‑standing pressure, burnout, or disconnection. Before becoming a psychotherapist, I served in the U.S. Navy during the Persian Gulf War aboard the USS Worden and later worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Ann Arbor. Those experiences shaped how I understand pressure, responsibility, and the kinds of burdens men carry.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Psychotherapy with me is a straightforward conversation about what’s actually going on beneath the surface. We slow things down enough to notice the patterns that shape how you move through your life. A session usually means taking a moment from your week, talking it through, and paying attention to what shifts as you do. The focus isn’t on quick fixes. It’s on understanding what’s happening inside you in real time. As we talk, certain reactions tend to show up — irritation, shutting down, feeling guarded, wanting to move on quickly, or trying to sound more put‑together than you feel. Those moments matter because they usually mirror how you operate outside the room. We pay attention to them without judgment. You don’t have to perform strength or have everything figured out. You just have to show up and be willing to look at what’s happening as it happens.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

All consultations are conducted by phone. You do not need to come into the office for this appointment. Sessions are available online or in person in my Ann Arbor office. Evening and Saturday appointments are offered. Sessions run 50 to 55 minutes. My process is steady and attentive. Men often come in carrying pressure, irritability, stress, or a sense of being stuck in patterns they cannot name. We slow things down and look closely at how you cope, connect, and move through your life. Over time, this gives you more clarity and a stronger internal footing. I pay attention to the moments when something shifts. Maybe your tone changes, you pull back, or something suddenly feels harder to say. These shifts usually point to the places where things get tight or complicated. When that happens, we slow it down and look at what moved. The goal is not to analyze you. It is to understand what is driving the reaction. I also notice the strategies you use to keep things manageable. Going quiet, getting sharp, staying in your head, changing the subject, or pushing through something instead of feeling it. These patterns often made sense at some point in your life, but they may not be serving you now. The goal is clarity. When you can see what is behind your reactions, you have more room to respond instead of getting pulled into the same loops. As things shift, many men describe more clarity, less reactivity, steadiness under pressure, better connection in their relationships, and a clearer sense of direction. The goal is not perfection. It is a more honest and steady way of living.
