Someone once told me they liked the way I bring quiet people into the conversation and make sure everyone has the chance to speak. That feedback stuck with me because it captures something I do instinctively. I notice the person who isn't saying much. I always have. I want them to know their voice matters without putting them on the spot, and I think that instinct started long before I became a therapist. I'm Brianna, and when I was younger I struggled with my own mental health. I worked with a therapist who had a huge impact on my life, and for the first time I felt heard, supported, and a little less alone. I remember constantly being asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and never having an answer. Eventually I realized I wanted to be that person for someone else. The one who makes you feel like what you're going through is valid and worth talking about. That's what led me to Fordham University for social work and eventually into this career.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My biggest frustration with how therapy gets portrayed is the idea that it's a professional telling you what's wrong with you and how you should fix it. That's not how I work. I use CBT and DBT to help you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, but the goal is never to lecture you or hand you a list of instructions. I want to recognize the strengths you already have and build on them together. You're not starting from zero. You're starting from a place that already has more going for it than you probably realize.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I'm drawn to working with people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or caught in patterns they don't know how to break. Anxiety, stress, relationships, self-esteem, substance use, life transitions, or just that persistent feeling that something isn't quite right but you can't put your finger on what. I enjoy getting to know the person beyond what brought them into the room because everyone carries different experiences and ways of coping, and understanding those things is how I figure out what will help. My grandmother and mother always told me 'She believed she could, so she did.' They'd repeat it whenever I was doubting myself, and that reminder kept me going when things got tough. I think about that quote a lot when I'm sitting with someone who isn't sure they can change. Starting something new is uncomfortable. I recently picked up crochet and I'm terrible at it, but I keep going because being a beginner at something is humbling in a way I think is good for me. I'd never ask my clients to do something I wasn't willing to do myself.
