Psychotherapist
2700 Corporate Dr, Ste 200, Birmingham, AL
Are you feeling stuck between who you are and who you know you were meant to be? I'm Brion Carlson, and I help my clients build a life worth living and a Self worth living it. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and complementary approaches, I support those grappling with meaning, mortality, authenticity, and purpose. I specialize in the depressions, anxieties, and addictions that have these deeper existential roots, as well as other blocks to authenticity, such as people pleasing, and perfectionism. This is a second career for me, and I'm so thankful for the opportunity. Life has brought me my own losses and difficulties, and I've emerged both healed enough and scarred enough to become a relatable, effective therapist for others. I bring that life experience alongside a rigorous clinical education: a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from UAB, and advanced training in DBT, ACT, and EMDR. I appreciate the strength it takes to reach out for therapy. It takes even more courage to admit our true hopes and dreams to another person. But life is so short. And this is your moment. My journey has led me here too, and now it's my purpose to help you.

Getting to know Brion Carlson

What should a new client know about working with you?

I draw on four complementary approaches: DBT for practical skills, ACT for deep skills, and EMDR and IFS to uncover and rework the patterns that have kept you stuck. Woven together, these are powerful and cover much of what therapy has to offer. I believe in building new skills and new understandings. But my ultimate aim is to help you find and liberate your higher Self. Good therapy serves two roles — it supports you, and it challenges you. I work to find the right balance of both with each client. But fair warning: I will eventually encourage you to pick some goals, do some work, and make things better. That's just how I'm wired. And I think it's what real caring looks like. I deeply believe that everyone can improve their life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I take a well-organized but flexible approach to therapy that's designed to help you get your true needs met. It's like a road trip; I bring a map, and you drive. Our first session will focus on your story and what you hope to accomplish. Don't worry. You don't need to have everything (or even anything) figured out before coming in. Together, we'll get oriented and set a course. After the first session, most clients leave feeling better understood and with a better sense of how therapy can help. Therapy is a special kind of healing partnership. If I earn your honesty, we can learn from each other and find a new way forward. Together, we can build the skills and new understandings you need to reconnect with your values and the energy and courage it takes to live them.
