Getting to know Brithney Sandiford

Hi, My name is Brithney, and I am a proud Afro-Latina, bilingual, and licensed Mental Health Counselor based in New York City. I hold a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from the City University of New York, Brooklyn College. I specialize in individual and couples therapy and am genuinely excited to embark on a journey of healing and discovery with you. I can assist you with various challenges, including emotional distress, cultural issues, life transitions, relationships, and loss and grief, among others. My goal in therapy is straightforward: to help you gain insight and equip you with the tools needed to live a balanced and fulfilling life. Together, we can empower you to take control and make meaningful changes in your life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I use a combined approach of evidence-based methods to serve you, including Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Gestalt, Mindfulness, and DBT techniques. For couples counseling, I incorporate Gottman methods. My goal is to create a safe and welcoming space where healing and growth can flourish. Together, we will work as a team to gain a deep understanding of yourself, and I will provide you with the tools you need to succeed.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

As a culturally sensitive, LGBTQ+ affirming, and Gottman-trained Counselor, I have experience helping clients from diverse backgrounds who are dealing with a variety of mental health issues. My goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and understood in a warm, empathetic, and supportive environment. You are the architect of your life, and I focus on your unique needs and goals to help you achieve them. It is my aim to provide you with the support and validation you need every step of the way.

Took long to communicate that I wasn’t able to be seen the day that I set my appointment because of some paperwork. It would have been no problem if she had let me know in advance of the meeting or if we completed the paperwork for our time slot. Instead she says we won’t be able to have an actual session, but a 15 minute consultation, and instead of having the consultation take place at the same time we set our session for, she wants to push it to a later time. And she told us all this information the day of the appointment when I had already changed my schedule around just to have this appointment done.

We had our first session (we are a couple - pre martial) and Brithney was amazing. She explained how she works, what she would need from us and how therapy works, if neither of us have ever done so. I appreciate the homework, her down to earth bedside manner and overall professionalism.

I really enjoy my therapy sessions with Brithney, she’s very helpful, compassionate and able to meet me where I’m at emotionally to work through tough times in life.
Therapy has helped me so much in the last year. I tried therapy once prior to this and it just wasn't a right fit. However, this time I feel comfortable and know that I am in a safe space. She has an excellent bedside manner and has always been professional.
Brithney is truly the best. Having her as a therapist has changed me for the better in a lot of ways. Her attention and understanding as well as her relatable nature makes me look forward to every session with her. Granted there are a lot of difficult moments but she has my entire trust through the process.
My visit from day one has been constant reflections, homework that has allowed me to untapped into my hidden vulnerable side because of Brithney’s guidance, held space for me to open up during every visit. My life’s journey during the pandemic would have not elevated me for the better, if not for Brithney’s continued support and allowing me to find & be my truest self as well as better understand & hold grace for my family, love ones & acquaintances. The famous Esther Perel snapped her fingers at me in acknowledgement for how far I’ve come & I owe it all to Brithney, who played a pivotal role. Thank you immensely and from the bottom of my heart Brithney. I am grateful for your existence & appreciate you.
