Brooke Burch, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
Hi! I'm Brooke. I'm a bilingual LMHC who has over a decade of experience working with the Deaf community as an ASL interpreter.IT was within this work that I found my passion for mental health and accessibility. I am committed to providing a virtual space where you can show up and find healing within our professional relationship. I am described by peers as being honest, authentic, caring and funny (okay I mostly describe myself as funny but sometimes people laugh with me). I am passionate about mental health and about empowering those who have been harmed by people and systems. I am passionate about human rights, and won't sugarcoat around the "ism's" ie: racism, ableism etc. My style includes boundary setting, empowerment, and self compassion as we navigate your needs. If you are looking for a therapist who will cheer you on to achieve your goals while providing space to process your past experiences and current stressors then we may be a good fit.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer services in American Sign Language and English. I work with you to feel empowered in your journey by seeing you fully through your experiences, your goals and how you show up today in the present. I offer direct but compassionate feedback that allows you to utilize a new perspective and skills outside of therapy to help you to feel more balanced. I specialize in Dialectical Behavior Therapy which utilizes skills to stay in the present versus being controlled by fears of the future or dread from the past, cope with discomfort in healthy ways, and show up authentically to obtain and maintain relationships that are healthy for you. I also utilize other types of therapy depending on what your specific needs are. Your treatment is tailored to you, and our relationship is the most important piece. I will truly invest in your healing and support you with an unconditional positive attitude. I know you want to feel better, and I want you to know I am equally committed to that goal.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me is centered first around checking in on your current stressors, learning about your strengths, your interests, and your sensitivities that may be causing you distress. Together we will complete assessments to see if your symptoms meet any diagnostic criteria and I can educate you on how the physical, emotional and mental things you are experiencing have a name and what treatment for that looks like. While the past doesn't define you, I do explore how past experiences (especially those from childhood) impact your current view of yourself, your relationships and your self-esteem. If there's any areas for reframe, I will provide a more fact-based perspective that may feel more neutral or positive rather than critical. I will suggest/teach skills, tips or exercises in session that we can practice together to help improve your confidence in utilizing them outside of session. Most importantly, you'll have time in session to share with me what's on your mind and ask any questions that come up. Trust is really important and maybe even the most crucial piece of our relationship and taking time to develop that trust is a worthy way to spend our time together. I look forward to getting to know you and figuring out how to be helpful.
