What should a new client know about working with you?

Welcome to a space where your voice is heard, your story is valued, and your well-being is the priority. I am Dr. Cal E. Spinks, a multicultural counselor and trauma recovery specialist deeply committed to creating a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for every individual I work with. My passion lies in serving marginalized and underserved communities, ensuring that people from all walks of life—especially those who have often been overlooked by traditional systems of care—receive the understanding and support they deserve. When you work with me, you can expect a personalized, compassionate, and culturally responsive approach to therapy. I take the time to understand your unique experiences, values, and goals. Whether you’re seeking support for healing from trauma, navigating the complexities of life transitions, or simply exploring ways to achieve greater balance and joy, we’ll collaborate to design a path forward that feels authentic to you. My therapy style is rooted in warmth, engagement, and a focus on building trust. I utilize evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, and trauma-informed care to help you address challenges and develop practical strategies for growth. You will always be treated as a whole person, not just a collection of symptoms. One of my core beliefs is that therapy is not just about addressing pain but also about discovering your inner strengths. Together, we will work to uncover and challenge limiting beliefs, explore new perspectives, and cultivate tools to help you navigate life’s complexities with confidence. I aim to empower you to reconnect with your sense of purpose and tap into the potential that’s already within you. You belong here, and this is a space where your story can unfold in its fullest. Let’s work together to create a life that aligns with your values, aspirations, and strengths. Your healing matters, and I’m honored to walk this path with you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When you work with me, you can expect a collaborative approach designed to meet your unique needs. Our process begins with a comprehensive intake session where we’ll explore your history, challenges, goals, and strengths. This session is an opportunity for you to share your story and for us to begin building a foundation of trust. Together, we’ll create a plan that outlines what you want to achieve and how we’ll work toward those goals. A typical session is a space for you to feel seen, heard, and supported. Sessions are structured yet flexible, allowing us to adapt to your needs in the moment. We’ll start by checking in about your week—what’s been going well, any challenges you’ve faced, and how you’ve been feeling. From there, we’ll dive deeper into specific topics or concerns, often using evidence-based techniques. I also incorporate a multicultural lens to ensure our work is grounded in your values, identity, and lived experiences. Throughout our work, I prioritize creating a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you can explore your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors without fear. We’ll set actionable goals together, whether it’s managing anxiety, addressing past trauma, or building stronger relationships. Each session will include time to reflect on progress, practice new skills, and explore solutions to challenges you may be facing. For clients healing from trauma or navigating complex life transitions, we may use grounding exercises or mindfulness techniques to help you stay present and build resilience. If cultural or systemic challenges are impacting your mental health, we’ll address those factors with empathy and actionable strategies to empower you in your journey. The process doesn’t end when the session does—I often provide optional personal growth work or reflective exercises to deepen the work we do together. These may include journaling prompts, mindfulness exercises, or small challenges to help integrate therapy into your daily life.

More information on payments and coverage

At our practice, we aim to ensure you feel informed and supported when it comes to understanding your payment and insurance coverage options. Whether you are using insurance or paying privately, we want to make the process as straightforward as possible. If you are using insurance, here’s how it works: If we are an in-network provider with your insurance company, we have agreed to accept their contracted rate as full payment for services. This means you will only be responsible for your portion, which may include co-pays, co-insurance, or deductibles as outlined by your insurance plan. For out-of-network insurance, we can provide you with a superbill (an itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. In these cases, you would pay our full session fee upfront, and reimbursement will depend on your specific insurance policy. Payments for co-pays, co-insurance, or full session fees are due at the time of service. We offer various payment options, including credit cards, debit cards, HSA/FSA cards, and checks, to make the process as convenient as possible. If your insurance plan requires pre-authorization for services, we are happy to assist you in ensuring all necessary approvals are in place before your therapy begins. We understand that financial concerns can sometimes be a barrier to care. If this is the case for you, please let us know, as we may be able to offer sliding scale fees based on your income and financial situation. Additionally, if you are unsure about your insurance benefits, we are here to help. We can assist you in verifying your mental health coverage and understanding what your plan includes. We are committed to clear and transparent communication. If there are any changes to your coverage or our billing practices, we will notify you promptly so that there are no surprises. If you have any questions or concerns about payments or coverage, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.
