“Canaan created a safe space to be vulnerable and work through a lot of hurt when I wasn't able to bottle it up anymore. Somehow he knew when to push and when to be patient without it ever seeming like things were out of my control. Our sessions helped me find a new, more self-affirming voice and tools to use when negative thinking attempts to steal my joy. I've had some very good experiences with counseling before but working with Canaan has been life changing. (Maybe that sounds melodramatic but it's true) Throughout this stage of therapy I've put a lot of work into becoming better and Canaan was an excellent guide.”

Getting to know Canaan Baker

I specialize in working with adult children of emotionally immature parents who struggle with boundaries, guilt, and difficult relationship patterns. I help clients understand how early family dynamics continue to shape their emotional responses and support them in building healthier, more stable connections. My approach is structured, culturally aware, and faith-informed when desired.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is intentional, structured, and focused on lasting change. Many of the clients I work with grew up having to be the responsible one — managing emotions, keeping the peace, or suppressing their own needs. In our work together, we slow down enough to understand how those early patterns continue to shape your boundaries, relationships, and emotional responses today. I am direct, but supportive. Therapy will not be passive. We will identify patterns, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and build practical tools for emotional regulation, communication, and boundary-setting. You can expect: • Clear goals and direction • Honest conversations • Practical strategies you can apply outside of sessions • Accountability alongside support • A culturally grounded perspective • Faith integration if it is important to you My goal is not long-term dependency. It is to help you build emotional clarity, confidence, and stability so you can relate to others in healthier, more secure ways. This work is deep — and it requires willingness. But for those ready to break generational patterns and develop a stronger sense of self, the results can be life-changing. I charge $150 for a 50-minute session and accept credit cards at the time of the appointment. I do not bill insurance, however, I provide you with a superbill at the end of each month that you can submit to your insurance company. Before booking an appointment, I suggest calling the number on the back of your insurance card to inquire about your ‘out-of-network’ therapy benefits and learn how to submit an out-of-network reimbursement claim.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work is structured and growth-focused. We begin by clarifying your goals and identifying patterns contributing to stress, relationship conflict, or emotional strain. From there, we build practical skills for emotional regulation, communication, and healthy boundary setting. For clients who value their Christian faith, therapy can thoughtfully integrate spiritual beliefs while maintaining strong clinical foundations. My goal is to help you develop lasting emotional strength and stability.
