“Carey was a great listener. I've found some therapists can be over eager to jump in and disrupt my thought process. Carey would really allow me to explore my mental and emotional space and really tuned me into practices and even content that would satiate my curiosity for advancing my mental health. I would always schedule sessions right after work, when I found I was in some of my more conflicted mental spaces. Without fail I would leave energized if not at least renewed. I highly recommend Carey!”

Getting to know Carey Cloyd

PLEASE NOTE: I accept self-pay patients only. I do not take Medi-cal or Medi-care, and I do not prescribe medication. I have over 20 years experience providing therapy to adults (18+ years old). Compassion and intuition characterize my style and I consider truth, the present moment, and the body as rich sources of information in therapeutic work. I have extensive experience helping with anxiety, depression, couples, grief, phase of life issues, and spirituality - among other presenting issues. TREATMENT ORIENTATIONS that most influence my work include: Humanistic/Existential Somatic Integrative/Eclectic Family/Marital Transpersonal TREATMENT MODALITIES: The HAKOMI method is a core element of my practice. Hakomi is a body-centered approach combining the Eastern traditions of mindfulness and non-violence with a unique, highly effective Western methodology. With safety and connection between therapist and client, core material can be accessed rapidly, re-evaluated and when helpful, transformed for a fuller experience of life. THE WORK OF BYRON KATIE is of particular interest to me and very useful for investigating and unraveling stressful thoughts. It is a simple and powerful way form of inquiry to identify and question thoughts that lead to suffering. My work is also informed by a variety of practices, including daily meditation, as well as yoga, movement, and time in nature. Having completed training in bodywork and energywork, these modalities also influence my psychotherapy practice. I have studied at the following schools: University of Denver, MA in Counseling Psychology, 2002. Stanford University, BA in English Literature, 1999. Humanities Honors Thesis. Professional affiliations include: Co-coordinator for the Nondual Wisdom & Psychology Conference, hosted by CIIS Public Programs, 2009-2018. Member of statewide CAMFT, 2003-present.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Booking through Zocdoc is for a 50 minute appointment with the corresponding fee. Once I receive your email address and phone number, I will send intake forms by email through SimplePractice, and you can let me know your chosen form of payment. In the initial appointment, we will discuss what you would like help with and identify your goals for therapy. Then I create a treatment plan for you that will be updated as needed throughout your time in therapy. My approach is best described as somatic and experiential, or in other words, body-centered and in the moment. There is attention paid to the various dimensions of one's experience - cognitive, emotional, physical and energetic.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy is scheduled weekly or sometimes twice a week for a 50-minute session. Each person is unique. Some may meet for a relatively short time and others may continue longer-term, depending on needs and interests. After an initial session or two, I find the best results are made when there is an initial commitment of 10 sessions. This short-term framework allows enough time to create some significant and lasting changes. That can then be updated to continue mid to long-term if that is useful and of interest to you. Many of the clients I work with choose to meet for a period of months to years to engage in deep work that over time solidifies gains and firmly establishes new ways of being.

I can easily help you claim your out of network (OON) insurance benefits by providing a monthly superbill to submit to your insurance company. If you choose to spend FSA/HSA funds, that provides significant savings (approximately 30%) since those are pre-tax funds. Alternately, if applicable, you can take a tax deduction for therapy sessions as a qualified medical expense. You can check your insurance coverage by calling your provider and asking the following questions: -What is my deductible? What portion of it has been met, if any? - Once the deductible has been met, what is the allowed amount per therapy session? - Once the deductible has been met, what percentage of the allowed amount will I be reimbursed? Most PPO plans reimburse somewhere between 30-70% of the allowed amount. While you can be reimbursed the maximum amount by submitting superbills on your own behalf, you can use an app called Reimbursify that simplifies the process for you for a small fee.

Carey is a warm and thoughtful clinician. I still carry her wisdom with me to this day!

I was very happy with Carey's professionalism and compassion. She offered many resources for me to follow up with and I feel I progressed while meeting with her.
I recently had the pleasure of working with Carey to process childhood traumas and grief, and my experience was truly positive. Carey provides a safe and mindful environment where deep emotions can be explored without fear of judgment. Her empathic and sharp approach helped me gain valuable insight into my thoughts and behaviors. Carey has a unique ability to tune into her clients' feelings and experiences, which enables her to provide thoughtful questions and challenge when necessary. Her guidance and support have been invaluable in my healing journey. I would highly recommend Carey to anyone seeking a skilled and compassionate therapist. Thank you, Carey, for the work that you do.
My husband & I did regular sessions with Carey for over 6 months. Her manner is patient, gentle, but to the point at the same time. She gave us the language we needed to better communicate & probe with one another on issues. She spent equal time understand us individually as well as a unit. This was helpful in getting to the core of our issues and moving forward. I would recommend Carey to anyone seeking help for communication and thoughtful guidance in relationship issues .
I met Carey in 2013, and worked with her for several years. She quickly gained my trust, no small matter, and she deftly guided me using a variety of methods. She also consistently shared with me a profound sense of presence. Carey is a great therapist and a natural teacher. I am thankful that our paths crossed.
Simply put, Carey is the best therapist I have every worked with. Over the course of a year and a half of working together, she helped me change my life. Her sessions created space for me to work through several decades-old traumas and toxic relationships, while giving me tools to understand and manage more immediate stresses and issues. I look at my life and its possibilities in a fundamentally different way after our work together. It should go without saying that any kind of therapy is hard work, and I had to do a lot as a patient. But Carey was there for me in ways that many other therapists I had seen before just weren't. She is kind, understanding, and deeply compassionate. I wish the world had more therapists like her.
Carey is exceptionally compassionate and good at creating a safe space. I always felt like I could relax and be myself around her. I saw Carey on a weekly basis over the last 4+ years. Especially during the time of the pandemic when I was isolated from family and friends, our sessions helped to ground me in nature, gratitude, and also to grieve being so far from loved ones. Carey helped me through many different ups and downs in my own life, including some sudden health setbacks, dealing with and clearing toxic relationships from my life, and also standing up for myself in multiple situations where I had felt constrained to speak. Speaking with Carey on a weekly basis helped me to gain more awareness about patterns in my own life, my own needs, and steps to take to live a more empowered life in line with my values. Would recommend Carey 100%!
