“I have had the privilege of working with Carl, and I can confidently say he is exceptional. What sets Carl apart is his patience and logical reasoning. He not only listens attentively but also guides you with clear explanations and a focus on achieving meaningful change. His blend of Zen, Stoicism, and cognitive therapy creates a unique and effective treatment experience. One aspect of Carl's therapy that I found particularly impactful is his use of homework assignments. This is where the transformation happens. In just 10 sessions with Carl, I've gained more insights, awareness, and experienced more significant change than I did in over 50+ sessions with previous therapists. I wholeheartedly recommend Carl to anyone ready to commit to their own growth and eager to make real, lasting change in their life. If you're willing to do the work, Carl is an invaluable guide on your journey to emotional well-being and personal development”

Getting to know Carl Chinn

First of all, thank you for considering me to help you through the hard time you're experiencing. I have a deep spiritual conviction that we're all on the same human team and that we are all in this together. I want to be an active member of your team and have a wealth of experience to offer. Since earning my Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Marshall University, I have been a counselor since 2012 and have had hundreds of folks walk through my door. Rather than focusing on trying to heal our wounds from the past, the kind of treatment I offer is similar to the mental health version of physical therapy. Rather than stitching a wound together and scratching the scar that it leaves behind, we're aiming to increase your strength and flexibility so that you're not only back to your old self, you may even feel better than you did before these issues first started causing trouble for you. It's a lot of work but the results are very consistent. We get better at whatever we practice. For many folks, they've struggled with running away or hiding from things, and fair enough, our troubles can be terrifying. With me on your team, I hope to help you take the steps to practice getting stronger, to grow our bravery, our courage, and our sense of purpose. If those are stronger than the things that have previously dragged us down, we'll make progress.

What should a new client know about working with you?

It's been my experience that the clients I've had have had one of three different kinds of experiences with therapists in the past: - The first is a therapist that chats with you and gives you space to vent and perhaps they offer advice. - The second is a therapist that offers coping skills which is like the mental version of a pain-killer; it feels better but it doesn't address the underlying issue. - The third is the category I put myself in and what you can expect from me and that's "processing". It's my win condition to help you with growing a routine that you can use long after we're finished that will help you to continue growing your strength, intercepting any problems, and live the life you aspire to live. The techniques that I use come from REBT, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. It's a therapy that's been reliably getting people results for more than 70 years now and has it's roots deeply embedded in the philosophies of Zen and Stoicism. Through using these cognitive techniques in conjunction with their existential roots, our sessions and your homework will be aimed at routinizing what I compare to a mental "kung fu." The goal is that the more you practice, the more of a mental muscle-memory will develop that will be dealing with problems before you even notice them. And if those problems require direct attention, these techniques can serve as a rigid systematic art form for dealing with them.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Based on my previous clients, I've found that clients typically find a profound reduction in symptoms within 3 months of weekly sessions if they complete their homework assignments. Though there are many factors that may detract from this average, it's my expectation that therapy ends when you've found the success that you're looking for. My business model is that people get results and tell others about my services rather than trying to hold onto people forever. The intake session is unique in that it's an hour of me asking you questions about what has been bothering you so I can get to know your situation better. The sessions that come after that entail a review of homework, followed by some processing and concluding in more homework. These assignments are generally something folks look forward to and feel energized about rather than being laborsome chores. The great part of being strength-based rather than wound based is that most of our conversations are aimed at you feeling stronger which we consistently aim for. Though I prefer to see people weekly for close follow-through on progress in treatment, I can balloon treatment out to monthly if people can commit to the homework requirement, which is increased to make sure that progress remains consistent. People's situations are different and I'm open to finding a way to work together.

Carl truly helped me reach my true potential. I first started working with him hoping to just alleviate some of my anxieties, but this work ended up completely changing my life for the better. Carl is a very kind, respectful, intelligent therapist who will work with you to improve what YOU want improving. His sessions are personalized, and will give you the tools you need to grow, which has worked great for me in both the short and long term. I thought it was impossible to live up to my potential, but the work I did with Carl makes me proud of myself, and optimistic for the future.
When I started working with Carl, I was looking to truly take hold of my life. I wanted to put a stop to patterns and processes of thought that had consistently led me farther from stillness and the joy of pursuing my process as an artist and a person. After every session, I came away with something instantly actionable, attainable, and meaningful. In just a few months, Carl helped me become a more patient and loving father and husband, as well as a more creative person. But more than that, he helped me positively reframe my perspective on how I see and interact with the world.
    Amazing person

It took me a while to find Carl but I’m very grateful I did. Carl is an excellent therapist. He is very methodical and deliberate in his treatment strategy even if he makes it all look very easy and natural. He comes well prepared to every session and identifies the root problem thoughtfully and carefully. I have benefitted immensely from his therapy and cannot recommend him enough!

Carl Chinn is a special kind of breed and hands down best therapist out there. I’m very skeptical of therapy in general and talking to someone in the hope of making progress in a given area. But Carl turned that belief of mine upside down—-to quote him “you should fire a therapist who gives you advice” so he’s not in there sitting there telling you what to do, but what he does is provide you systems, tools, and methods of viewing the world that make you make such decisions on your own more easily without any negative feelings or consequences. And he translates your words and feelings into these systems in real time to show you how you can apply them yourself. You can tell that he has this system DIALED IN and don’t know what to say other than it works tremendously beautifully. I feel like I get a mix of therapy, life coaching, executive coaching, and just becoming a better person overall after every session with Carl. He’s the man
I really enjoyed my sessions with Carl. I went to him for anxiety and panic attacks. I felt like my job was causing me a lot of stress and pressure. There were times I’d wake up with dread, feeling anxious. It’s not that I don’t like my job, it’s that it’s a startup and there are so many ups and downs. It’s intense and requires full focus. Carl brought many helpful tools within my life and a model that really helped me break down where my anxiety was coming from and ways I can create more awareness around it and also actionable insight on how to solve the problem, versus a bandaid or just a talking session. I love how action oriented my sessions were. Within 3 months I feel more capable and calm in my day to day life. His approach is thoughtful and his demeanor is warm and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend Carl to anyone really looking make a change and willing to do the work. He was empathetic, patient, and understanding. Thank you!
Carl is one of those people who genuinely cares and wants to help because helping others to him is more of a mission and purpose rather than an occupation. He is a wealth of insight, yet makes no secrets out how he arrived at those insights and is happy to teach you the tools you need to get there yourself. He is pretty incredible.
I was apprehensive to start therapy but chose to try it out. Prior to my first appointment the therapist gave me an introductory phone call and emailed me some pre-assessments in order to have a better understanding of my, I suppose, condition. I loved that he was very flexible, soft spoken, and understanding especially since it was my first time receiving therapy. After every session that followed, he would assign (fun) "homework" which I would complete over the span of 2 weeks, as per our time arrangement. I thought this was unique. He taught me how to accept and regulate my own thoughts and feelings. I really recommend CBT if you constantly feel anxious and upset about feeling down.

This is only my first session but I felt valued with Carl and he made me feel a bit at ease. He asked great questions to start unpacking my trauma and he clearly laid out the path/plan to healing. I would recommend Carl to anyone searching for a plan of action to healing your mind. I look forward to my next visit and seeing how I progress.

I was very scared originally to start counseling. I cried during the intake interview. Carl took me on as a client and after a session or two, I started to relax because I felt safe. He was kind, soft spoken and understanding. We didn't discuss huge traumatic events in my past, instead we focused on how I felt now and what I wanted to change. I feel like I was given the tools to help myself rather than go over every little thing that ever bothered me. At first I was a little put off by this approach because it's not what I thought counseling was. After a few appointments, I started to see the value in his method. Now I feel incredibly more stable. I'm happy, hopeful and actually look forward to my day. If I hadn't gotten Carl as my counselor, I'm not sure I could have made such amazing progress. I would definitely recommend him.
I don’t want to sound hyperbolic, but the work the Carl guided me through over the course of two years was life changing. I came to Carl during a very low point and am now in a much better place. My relationships are more meaningful and my passion for life and all of its ups and downs have been renewed. I never once felt judged while talking to Carl. He was extremely patient and kind during everyone of our interactions. He has an exceptional way of making abstract ideas relatable. I highly recommend talking to Carl if you need any help along this journey that we are all on.
Carl was quick to foster a comfortable environment where our topics are driven by a loose plan and how I am personally doing. His online presence has helped us to stay connected even during my business travel. Carl's cooperation and active listening have helped me in both my work and personal life to empathize with others and better appreciate my role.
Every visit was nothing short of warm, pleasant and transformative. Carl has incredible attention to detail and an attitude dedicated to helping you in any way he can, and he does so efficiently. I have nothing to complain about and only recommend that folks see him sooner.
Carl has been such a great support in my life and has helped me feel more in control of my emotions and reactions. Carl is very accommodating and gets back to me really quickly when things come up and I feel like I need to fit in another session. I highly recommend connecting with Carl!
I would recommend Carl Chinn to anyone. I had meetings with 2 other counselors before meeting with Carl and he has been more than impressive. His ability to connect with his patients on a personal level really makes it feel like you're talking to a friend. I started meeting with Carl in February this year and I can honestly say he has changed my life. It feels like he has an answer for everything and will provide you with constructive attainable "homework" that is not only rewarding but really makes you feel like you're making a change. Go see Carl!!
The sessions give my guidance and perspective of my life and my surroundings. The take aways no matter how big or small are impactful and help with targeting what can be improved in yourself. Goes above and beyond with for his clients even working when overseas. Would highly recommend.
Carl is a great therapist. He is patient, understanding, actively listens and meets you where you are. He also holds you accountable in order to ensure that you are actually achieving progress through his services and attaining the goals you set for yourself. He is extremely knowledgeable and is clearly passionate about helping his patients. I highly recommend him as a therapist and continuously look forward to the progress I make with each session!
I really enjoy the conversations I have when in therapy. There are good mixes of light conversation and in depth conversation that keep session from becoming over bearing. I enjoy the professionalism as well as the ease and comfort while conversing. I have never been so open to therapy and I love the transparency during sessions. I also enjoy his approach to helping guide me to healing and the exercises I receive to aide me when not in a session. Overall this has been my best experience with therapy.
