“I called her to see if I could schedule an appt. She spent about 20 mins on the phone with me n then scheduled my 1st appt within a few days. I’ve been a patient for almost a year and I just love her. I actually look forward to our sessions. She is compassionate, understanding, kind and truthful with me when I ask her opinion, she doesn’t just say what she thinks I want to hear. I would HIGHLY recommend Catherine Jacobsen. Getting to know Catherine Jacobsen

Welcome I am an experienced clinician and a Certified Grief and Loss Educator with a Master's in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania. While grief and loss is an area of special interest, my specialties also include trauma, anxiety disorders such as OCD and Panic Disorder, depression, relationship issues, and life transitions. Grief is often unacknowledged in losses such as divorce, pregnancy, adoption, job loss, disabling and chronic medical conditions, and life transitions. Grief and loss are both traumatic and transformative. Grief cannot be "cured" as it is not an illness; the timeline is uniquely your own. The journey is yours-I am your guide. HOPE alone is powerfully curative. Along your journey, I can help you develop hope. My own experience with grief and loss informs and inspires my practice. While my experience is different from yours, talking with someone who "knows" promotes an unspoken bond.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am supportive and easy to talk to. Most people find me thoughtful and insightful as well as down to earth and direct. You will leave your first session feeling understood, more hopeful and with at least one new coping skill in hand. I help people practice mindfulness, learn how to regulate their emotions, develop healthy coping skills to tolerate distress and improve their interpersonal effectiveness. I use a variety of therapeutic approaches- Psychodynamic and Emotionally Focused Psychotherapy which links your past to your present mindset. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which challenges distorted thought patterns that affect how you feel and behave. Ours is a partnership; change occurs in the context of a therapeutic relationship, not in isolation.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer you a safe place to explore your concerns and struggles, helping you find new, more satisfying directions forward. I actively address symptoms such a anxiety and depression, which can be paralyzing yet provide a window into underlying issues. During our initial visits we get to know one another, see if we are a 'good fit', identify the issues that bring you to therapy, uncover your strengths and resources and explore your relevant social and emotional history. We set treatment goals and routinely check in on our progress toward those goals.
