Dr. Catherine Kleinmuntz, PhD, LSW

Psychotherapist
213 W. Institute Pl., Ste 210, Chicago, IL
I earned my Master’s degree and PhD in Social Work from the University of Chicago. My clinical experience includes work in mental health programs across Chicago, including schools, outpatient programs, and hospital-based services. My work in children’s services and outpatient psychiatry gave me an understanding of the emotional, developmental, educational, family, and health-related challenges people face throughout their lives. After many years of clinical practice, I moved into business, co-founding two companies. During those years, I coached and mentored employees dealing with the personal and professional challenges that come with work, including performance pressures, work-life balance, career decisions, family demands, workplace relationships, and leadership. This combination of experiences has shaped the way I think about people and therapy. I understand that our emotional lives cannot be separated from our relationships, families, work, health, responsibilities, and the environments in which we live. Throughout my career, I have been interested in what makes people “tick”—their relationships, experiences, strengths and vulnerabilities, and the choices they make. People come to therapy for many reasons: a loss, a relationship that is struggling, worry about a child, work or family stress, illness, or a major change in life. But sometimes there is no single event. Life may look good from the outside, yet something feels missing or simply isn’t working. There can be a gap between the life someone is living and the life they want. I bring this perspective to my work with adolescents, adults, and couples. I work collaboratively with clients to understand what is troubling them, recognize patterns that may be getting in their way, and make changes that can lead to stronger relationships and a more satisfying life.

Getting to know Dr. Catherine Kleinmuntz

What should a new client know about working with you?

We know that therapy works best when people feel comfortable being themselves and talking openly about what is happening in their lives. So, I bring curiosity and listening to my work while recognizing that every person and couple is different. Ultimately, therapy has to reflect their individual needs and circumstances. I would describe my approach as collaborative and practical. I also take the time to understand the experiences, relationships, and patterns that contribute to current difficulties. I like to work with clients not only to address the problems that bring them to therapy. But that is only one piece of the puzzle. It is key for clients to end up being better able to understand themselves and one another, to strengthen important relationships to develop greater resilience, and to make meaningful changes in their lives. I work with adolescents, adults, and couples. With everyone, I recognizes that emotional well-being is often intertwined with one's context - be it school work or home. And in addition, obviously relationships, family responsibilities, work, losses and major life transitions are key to consider as well. My goal is to create a thoughtful, supportive space where clients can gain a deeper understanding of what they are experiencing, make meaningful changes, and build lives and relationships that feel more satisfying and fulfilling.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is thoughtful, and collaborative. I always begin by taking the time to understand what brings each client to therapy. I will also want to understand what is happening in their life now. And, of course, I am interested in the experiences and relationships that have shaped them. I draw from many perspectives. My approach is informed by psychodynamic, relational, developmental, and family systems perspectives as well as other therapeutic modalities. In all of these perspectives, there is the common element of working together to develop greater insight, identify strengths, consider new ways of responding to challenges, and make meaningful changes in clients' lives and relationships. Most importantly, I believe therapy needs to fit the person. I don’t approach clients with a predetermined formula; how we work together depends on who you are, what brings you to therapy, and what you need from it. Depending on a client’s needs, the work may focus on understanding longstanding patterns, navigating an immediate problem or transition, strengthening relationships, developing new ways of coping, or some combination of these. The goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help clients develop greater self-understanding, resilience, and the capacity to create lasting change.
