Charity Gary, LCSW

Psychotherapist
VA
With over 10 years of experience in the therapeutic field, my goal is to provide a compassionate, non-judgmental space where you feel truly heard and supported. I believe that therapy is a collaborative journey, and I utilize a patient-centered approach to ensure our work is always aligned with your unique goals, values, and pace. I specialize in evidence-based modalities to help you navigate life’s complexities. My primary frameworks include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): To help identify and reshape unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills: To improve emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. I bring a wealth of personal life experience to my practice. I am happily married and a proud parent of four children. Navigating the joys and challenges of a large family has deeply informed my empathy as a clinician. In particular, my journey raising a child on the Autism spectrum has given me a profound understanding of neurodiversity and the unique stressors faced by caregivers and families. I am passionate about supporting parents and individuals walking similar paths, offering both professional tools and genuine lived empathy. For those who wish to draw strength from their spiritual foundation, I am experienced in incorporating Christian principles into our sessions. While I work with individuals from all walks of life and belief systems, I am happy to integrate faith-based perspectives to help you find healing and purpose. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, family transitions, or the daily demands of caregiving, I am here to help you move toward a more balanced and fulfilling life. I look forward to meeting you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you step into my virtual office, you are entering a space defined by clinical expertise, lived experience, and genuine warmth. Here is what you can expect from our partnership: A Patient-Centered Philosophy I don’t believe in "one-size-fits-all" therapy. My approach is patient-centered, meaning you are the expert on your own life. My role is to act as a skilled guide, helping you uncover insights and develop tools that work for your specific circumstances. We will move at a pace that feels safe for you, ensuring that our goals are always your goals. The "Toolbox": CBT & DBT I lean heavily on two of the most effective, evidence-based modalities to help you see tangible progress: CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): We will look at the "loops" between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. By identifying specific cognitive distortions, we can work together to reframe your perspective. DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): I provide practical skills for Emotional Regulation and Distress Tolerance. If you often feel overwhelmed by your emotions, DBT offers a "manual" for how to navigate those moments without feeling like you're losing control. Real-World Empathy Beyond my 10+ years of professional training, I bring the perspective of a wife and a mother of four. I understand the "triage" of daily life. Specifically, my experience parenting a child on the Autism spectrum means I deeply understand the complexities of neurodiversity, the exhaustion of advocacy, and the unique grief and joy that come with special-needs parenting. Integration of Faith If your faith is a cornerstone of your life, I am honored to walk that path with you. I can incorporate Christian values and biblical principles into our sessions to ensure your spiritual health is nurtured alongside your mental health. If you prefer a secular approach, I respect that completely and will focus solely on clinical frameworks.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together is a balance of structured skill-building and open, supportive dialogue. While every individual is different, I find that clients benefit most from a consistent rhythm that provides both emotional relief and practical progress. Here is a look at my typical process: The Initial Assessment (1st Session) Our first meeting is a "get to know you" session. We’ll discuss your history, your current struggles, and what you hope your life looks like six months from now. If you are seeking care related to neurodiversity or parenting, we will spend time discussing those specific dynamics. By the end of this session, we will have a clear "roadmap" for our work together. Once we’ve established our goals, a standard 45–50 minute session usually follows this flow: The Check-In (5-10 mins): We start by reviewing your week. Did any specific triggers arise? Were you able to practice the skills we discussed? The Deep Dive (25-30 mins): This is the "Talk Therapy" portion. We might use CBT to challenge a specific negative thought pattern that’s keeping you stuck, or use DBT frameworks to process a difficult emotional interaction. The Takeaway (5 mins): I am a "proactive" therapist. We will wrap up with a specific "homework" item or a mental tool to practice until our next meeting. My Therapeutic Style I am a patient-centered therapist, which means I am not here to lecture you. Think of me as a collaborative partner. I am patient, observant, and direct. Because I have over a decade of experience and a busy home life with four children, I value your time and aim to make every session feel productive and grounding. Ongoing Growth We will periodically "zoom out" to check your progress. My goal is to equip you with such a strong internal toolkit that eventually, you feel confident navigating life’s challenges without me.
