Charles King, LPC

Psychotherapist
VA
I am a licensed psychotherapist who works with adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, substance-use concerns, relationship difficulties, and major life transitions. My approach integrates evidence-informed psychotherapy with attachment theory, neuroscience, mindfulness, meditation, somatic awareness, and Eastern philosophy. Depending on a client’s needs, I may draw from EMDR, CBT, ACT, Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, and clinical hypnosis. Before becoming a therapist, I served in the United States Navy and worked internationally as an engineer for a major energy company. I am also an advanced RYT-500 yoga teacher. These experiences contribute to a style that is practical, culturally aware, curious, and attentive to the relationship among the mind, body, nervous system, and emotional life. I take the work seriously, but I do not believe every meaningful conversation must be solemn. Thoughtful humor can reduce shame, create perspective, and make difficult work feel more human.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is warm, collaborative, active, and occasionally humorous. I will listen carefully, but I am not the kind of therapist who remains silent, nods mysteriously, and leaves you wondering whether anything actually happened. I ask thoughtful questions, offer honest observations, teach practical skills, and respectfully challenge patterns that may once have protected you but now interfere with the life or relationships you want. You do not need to arrive with a perfectly organized explanation of what is wrong. We can begin with what you are experiencing now and work together to understand the emotions, relationships, beliefs, bodily responses, and earlier experiences that may be contributing to it. My role is not to tell you who to become. It is to help you understand yourself more clearly, develop greater emotional flexibility, and make choices that are increasingly guided by your values rather than by fear, shame, avoidance, or old survival patterns.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session begins with a brief check-in about what has happened since we last met and what feels most important to address that day. We may explore a recent situation, identify an emotional or relational pattern, examine the thoughts and beliefs surrounding it, and notice how the experience is showing up in the body. Depending on the focus, the session may include conversation, psychoeducation, mindfulness, grounding, cognitive reframing, communication practice, somatic work, EMDR preparation or processing, or clinical hypnosis. Sessions are structured enough to remain purposeful but flexible enough to respond to what is actually happening in your life. We will often end by identifying a practical next step, experiment, or skill to practice between sessions. The goal is not simply to understand why a pattern exists, although that matters. The goal is to help you do something useful with that understanding.
