Hello, I'm Chuck. I hold a master's degree in marriage, family & child counseling from the University of San Diego and an MBA from the University of New Mexico, where I also worked for ten years. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado and Texas, and an LPCC in New Mexico. While originally from California, I have also lived in New Mexico and Colorado. I currently live with my fiancé, Mia, in Colorado Springs along with our two dogs Kai and Pandora. I have a four-year-old son in heaven, a loss that undoubtedly contributed along with other losses to my desire to become a counselor. As a Christian attending a Calvary affiliated church, I respect all spiritual beliefs and incorporate clients' experiences into our work together. My experience working with Native groups in New Mexico has enriched my understanding of diverse cultural communications. In therapy, I draw from the Milan Systemic model and Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), emphasizing mindfulness, non-judgmental, and non-defensive approaches, which are particularly effective in couples therapy. I often integrate lessons from yoga to help manage anxiety. As a veteran of the United States Air Force, where I worked as a film producer, I bring a unique perspective to communication, often using terms like 'scenes' and 'takes.' I believe in working together as a 'treatment team,' making collaborative decisions. Many clients know the path they want but are stuck in maladaptive patterns from the past. I am unusually directive for a counselor, focusing on skills acquisition, problem-solving, and setting clear, definable goals. Before our first session, I ask new clients to fill in the blanks: 'The problem that I’m having in my (life, family, relationship, marriage, etc.) is ________; and 'The problem will be better when ________.' These statements help us focus on specific issues and refine them throughout therapy until we achieve the desired 'better.'
