“Therapy was not something I really enjoyed before meeting and working with Cheryl. I was forced to go as a kid but when I found myself going through some stressful times this year, I realized I needed to seek out help. Cheryl has taught me invaluable coping skills that I did not know I needed. The way she explains things makes sense and you really get the feeling that she is not judging you at all. Lover her!!!!”

Getting to know Cheryl Tarnofsky

Hi! I'm Cheryl Tarnofsky I always loved listening to people’s stories and helping my friends with their issues, so the prospect of combining art, which I loved about my previous career in fashion, and therapy was like magic to me. I absolutely love what I do now. Helping people grow, heal, and be empowered is a gift I try to not take for granted every single day. My background experience • Graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a MA in Marital and Family Therapy with a Specialization in Clinical Art Therapy in 2016 • Became a Registered Art Therapist and a Licensed MFT in 2019 • Previously worked with teens in foster care for 6 years • Engaged in on-the-job intensive DBT training with a comprehensive program for 1 year • Intensively trained as a DBT therapist by Marsha Linehan's organization, Behavioral Tech I love working with women who are motivated to change. I often find my strengths in helping those who struggle with relationship issues, emotion dysregulation, and feelings of worthlessness. Most of my clients have traits of or have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, and often have experienced a lot of trauma in their lives - I have the tools available to help if this is you! I feel very comfortable and confident that I can help folks going through stress and anxiety that stems from work, family life, and romantic relationships.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I love to get to know my clients really well, we work on what you want to work on and achieve the goals you most desire. Coming to therapy is not easy, but the work you put in to feel better is so worth it. I love teaching DBT skills to my clients as I've seen massive benefits in my clients and my own life in implementing these tools on a daily basis. My work with clients tends to be very relational, you will not be meeting with a blank-state therapist.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Prior to our first appointment there will be documents sent to you to fill out via our client portal. We'll take care of checking on your insurance benefits so that the process of billing is smooth and taken care of by the time we meet for the first time. Please be sure to check your text messages and email often as we may need additional information after you book with us here on ZocDoc. In the beginning, we get to know your background history, understand the onset of your current issues and identify what you want to achieve in working together. Together we decide the path forward, whether that's processing grief, learning new skills, or learning how to set boundaries with others.

I've worked with many therapists in the past, and I feel like Cheryl is one of the most caring and compassionate people I've worked with. She really gets to know her clients and makes you feel supported. Learning DBT from her as transformed many areas of my life and I can't thank her enough.
Been working with Cheryl for over 1 year now and I look forward to our sessions because I know she will offer guidance and support! I love that she does art therapy.
Cheryl is a very warm, knowledgeable therapist. She makes you feel comfortable and safe to express yourself. I would suggest her to any friend or family member who is really struggling and needs tools.
Before working with Cheryl I was completely debilitated by anxiety, depression, and feeling stuck in life. She really helped me see all the options in my life and gave me the hope that I could feel better one day. It's been 1.5 years since we started working together and my life is so different from when we first started.
I love Cheryl, I had to part ways with her due to moving out of California but if I were ever to move back, I would definitely work with her again. She is extremely kind, and validates your feelings. I never felt any judgement from her, and she really helped me think about things on my own so I could process and gather my thoughts. I also learned techniques from her that I still use today. I am very grateful to have had her as my therapist and strongly believe I wouldn't have made the progress I have made without her.
