What should a new client know about working with you?

I try to make therapy feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. I know that opening up to someone new can be hard, so I never expect you to come in and tell me everything immediately. A lot of the first few sessions are simply about getting to know each other and building trust. I am pretty laid-back and will always try to meet you where you are. Some sessions may be more serious, while others may involve laughing, joking, or just talking through whatever is going on that day. I want you to feel like you can be yourself without worrying about being judged. I am supportive, but I will also be honest with you and challenge you when I think it could be helpful. I don't believe therapy should feel like someone sitting across from you telling you what you need to do. I see it as something we work through together. When I work with kids, therapy usually looks a little different. We may play games, do activities, draw, talk, or sometimes just spend time building a relationship. I don't expect kids to sit on a couch and talk about their feelings for an hour. My biggest priority is creating a space where they feel comfortable and safe enough to be themselves.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I usually start by just getting to know you and figuring out what brought you to therapy. I want to know what's going on, what you're struggling with, what is already working, and what you would like to see change. I also think it's important for you to get to know me and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me. From there, we will set goals together and figure out what might actually be helpful to you. I use different therapy approaches depending on the person because what works really well for one client may not work at all for someone else. My sessions are usually pretty flexible. We may have something specific we are working on, but if you come in and something happens that week that you really need to talk about, we can absolutely shift gears. Some sessions involve processing and talking things through, while others may focus more on coping skills, communication, problem-solving, or recognizing patterns. With kids, I use a lot of games, activities, play, and hands-on ways of working on skills. Sometimes it may look like we're "just playing," but there is usually a reason behind what we're doing. Overall, I try not to overcomplicate therapy. We will talk about what's going on, figure out what you need, try different things, and adjust along the way. Therapy is your space, and I want it to be useful for you.
