Psychotherapist

When anxiety feels limiting, intrusive thoughts won’t quiet down, or the same argument keeps repeating with your partner, it’s easy to feel isolated and hopeless. You don’t need someone to fix you. You need someone who truly understands. Christine Huffaker, MA, LPC has a gift for being present in hard moments. Her path to becoming a therapist was shaped by her own experience with OCD, and she knows both the weight of being stuck and the relief on the other side. As she shares: “I know the pain and hopelessness of being stuck in a constant OCD cycle of intrusive thoughts and compulsions. I also know the hope on the other side of it.” Christine holds an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Indiana Wesleyan University and has three years of experience supporting teens, young adults, adults, older adults, and couples at our Naperville and Lemont offices. She specializes in anxiety, OCD, and relationship issues, and also works with ADD/ADHD, depression, religious and spiritual concerns, and self-esteem and self-worth. Her approach is warm, gentle, and tailored to you. Using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), she helps clients break free from the cycle of intrusive thoughts and compulsions and build lives that feel meaningful, even when OCD shows up. With couples, she draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy to move conversations away from “winning” and toward truly understanding one another. Underneath it all is Client-Centered therapy. Christine believes the relationship between therapist and client is one of the most powerful parts of the work, and that you are the expert in your own life. She works to reduce power dynamics, welcomes every emotion in the room, invites your feedback at any time, and celebrates every victory along the way. Outside of session, Christine enjoys time with her two Goldendoodles, Moose and Benny, and a good thriller novel. If she could try another career for a day, she’d be an actress.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My biggest strength is attunement. I notice the small shifts, and I take the time to tailor our work to what will help you most. As an empath, I care deeply about your experience, and I hope you’ll feel that from the first session. I work best with clients who want a gentle approach, especially those coming in with anxiety who need a calming, compassionate space. If you’re living with OCD, I understand how it differs from general anxiety, and I want you to know that intrusive thoughts mean nothing about you or your character. I also love working with couples who are ready to try new ways of communicating, including a tool we call the “comfort circle.”

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start by understanding your story and how anxiety, OCD, or whatever brought you in is affecting your daily life. We’ll honor what you’ve been through and validate how hard it has been, then find strategies that fit you specifically, because different things work for different people. For OCD, we practice noticing intrusive thoughts for what they are, just thoughts, and then take steps toward a life that feels meaningful to you even when they show up. With couples, I teach reflective listening, naming what you feel, and listening to your partner with curiosity. I often encourage setting aside intentional time together each week, and sometimes suggest a couples retreat as another way to reconnect.
