ME
I've always said a counselor can be that person for us who is non-judgmental, an objective listener, and is there to help support and guide YOU to the goals you are hoping to achieve. My name is Christine Stults, and I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Maine with over 16 years of experience working with adolescents, families, and young adults, and over 27 years of working within the mental health field, having worked with various ages, genders, races, and settings. My purpose is to be a safe, compassionate, responsible, resourceful, and supportive individual for you. I use several types of therapies to help support a person toward their personal goals. Depending on the reason, I may use Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Motivational Interviewing to help identify patterns, barriers, severity levels, and coping strategies. I may utilize Art or Play therapy to help explore thoughts and feelings through creative expression, or I may use Grief Therapy to help a person navigate the depths of grief and loss. In some situations, I may also incorporate mindfulness strategies to help teach and support various coping strategies. I work with pre-teens, teens, and young and older adults to help address and manage anxiety, depression, ADHD, grief and loss, or trauma. At times, these issues have affected attendance, academic, work, and/or athletic performances, and social and family relationships. With compassion, we explore the barriers and patterns contributing to your thoughts and feelings and identify ways to build your self-esteem, confidence, and positive mindsets. When addressing grief and trauma, I will provide a safe and calm pace to meet you where you are at while respecting the grieving process. Your time, your thoughts, your feelings, and your willingness to explore, learn, and grow are a gift and will be treated as such.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My communication style is calm, patient, supportive, empathetic, and compassionate, yet clear and open. I will listen without judgment and respectfully provide you with honest feedback when risks present themselves. I will validate you, your protective factors, and your efforts. We will explore ways to be safe, how to reach out for help when needed. When I was in high school, my aunt was a participant in an expressive therapy group for cancer patients. She and this group were using Art to express their thoughts and feelings as they were coping with cancer. I have always loved art and found learning about the human mind, behaviors, and emotions fascinating. It was then that I learned I could combine my two passions of Art and psychology to pursue a degree in Art Therapy. I graduated with my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Art Therapy from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT. While working towards my Master's Degree, I had the pleasure of learning through a valuable internship in an inpatient psychiatric unit for adults in Bridgeport, CT, and worked with older adults living in residential settings who were struggling with significant mental health disorders in New Haven, CT. From there, I moved back to Maine and worked with incarcerated youth at Long Creek Youth Development Center, which is when I discovered I loved working with adolescents and young adults. Throughout this time, I became fully licensed as a clinical counselor and then shifted to working with youth in a public middle school setting. This journey has validated my path as a counselor in so many ways, but has also helped me give back to all those people who helped and supported me throughout my lifetime. The compassion, empathy, and support they gave me helped to fuel how I want to show up for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My priority is to build trust and rapport with you. You must trust me and this therapeutic process. Collaboratively, we will work together to identify your personal goals and explore various achievable steps to accomplish those goals. At times, if needed, we will do some assessments to further explore contributing factors that will help in identifying more specific goals. We will adapt your plan over time to ensure that it is always meaningful to you. You can expect that in our first session, we will spend much of the time talking about what brought you to counseling, what you are hoping to achieve from our sessions, and getting to know each other. We will address any questions you have about what counseling looks like and how it can be for you. We will set a schedule, and if possible, in the first session, we will start to address what goals you are hoping to achieve and begin creating a treatment plan. Every person is different, so your treatment plan will be individualized to meet your needs.
