Getting to know Christopher Bakes

The provider is a “Licensed Social Worker" and is currently working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Their current employer is Sol Health.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I love the privilege of working with creative, insightful individuals looking to better understand themselves through a courageous exploration of the self. To that end, the experience of being human requires turning over complex ideas in the palm of your hand- it's both sublime in its potential for limitlessness, and can also be impacted by past experiences, how we wield language, perceive intention, and are willing to risk vulnerability and intimacy. This work is challenging and beautiful, and on the other side of it is the immensely rewarding and ongoing process of healing. As we go, we'll walk side-by-side at the pace you set. I obtained my clinical training at Columbia, focusing on treatment for young adults and adolescents. My clinical work is preceded by 10 years in tech (Meta, TikTok), and prior to that, earning my BA at Yale. I'm looking forward to meeting you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A session is usually a conversation that finds its shape as we go. Some weeks you might come to therapy with something specific you want to understand together; other times, you might find yourself experiencing a feeling that you're wanting to put language to. I listen closely for patterns and meaning, but also for the more subtle details which help me to get a sense for the multitudes you contain. The work has a way of unfolding gradually and leading to a deeper sense of being at home with oneself. Based on what you find helpful, we'll incorporate artistic, existential, spiritual, and humanistic approaches. You can expect warmth, investment, and- where appropriate- humor to support increased perspective. This highly personalized process is your space. It's important to me to offer a space that feels welcome- one where you can allow your mind to go where it needs to, free-associate between ideas, and meet with curiosity what comes to the surface. Together we’ll follow a pace that feels right for you, observing how you make sense of things, where you get caught, and what helps you to move forward. "It was what I was born for—to look, to listen, to lose myself inside this soft world." —Mary Oliver, "Mindful"

Working with Chris gave me the tools and confidence to navigate new challenges in my life. His thoughtfulness and kindness in every session created a space where I could truly grow and gain a deeper understanding of myself.
This is my first time in therapy, and I’m happy to say, Chris has inspired me to continue seeking therapy so I can view my life in a positive light. His insights are tailored to me and my background which helps me understand behavioral patterns better. He’s warm, friendly, non-judgmental and supportive, which creates a comfortable and welcoming environment to carry out discussions.
I think I surprised myself on wanting to continue therapy as I hadn't planned on it. I felt that Chris was able to understand how I was feeling and made me feel comfortable. I really appreciated his honesty and just knowing a tiny bit of his experiences. It made me feel normal and ever so more comfortable. That was huge for me and then just the patience with things and trust we've built over time to talk about more topics. It's really been a positive and surprising experience for me
Therapy with Chris has helped me slow down my overthinking and find better ways to articulate my thoughts, let alone plenty of other topics. He’s an excellent listener, has a great sense of humor, and creates a space where you feel comfortable being honest.
