Navigating the world presently can often mean feeling like you’re simultaneously doing too much and yet not enough, that people are both infinitely available and more distant, and encountering a dehumanization as one runs into yet another complex series of systemic challenges. Our work together seeks to create a feeling of empowerment within that, to confront unhealthy responses you recognize, identifying their source, and making positive changes not from a place of judgment but of affirmation.

Getting to know Claire Callahan

Navigating the world presently can often mean feeling like you’re simultaneously doing too much and yet not enough, that people are both infinitely available and more distant, and encountering a dehumanization as one runs into yet another complex series of systemic challenges. Our work together seeks to create a feeling of empowerment within that, to confront unhealthy responses you recognize, identifying their source, and making positive changes not from a place of judgment but of affirmation.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work from a relational, integrative approach, which is to say that I work to empower you as the expert of your own life, accompanied within the therapeutic relationship to see positive change. I often employ tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as psychodynamic work, but those are incorporated in conversation with you, and building or changing the plan together. The best predictor of positive outcomes within therapy is the strength of the therapeutic relationship, and it’s my experience that helping you feel heard & supported is an important part of fostering that. While I’m not afraid to confront or challenge clients, this comes from a place of supporting the growth you identify as valuable.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A lot of my work, study, and research has included LGBTQ+ and/or gender affirmative therapy, substance use counseling, couples work, as well as work with Bipolar Disorder and ADHD, and I’m always excited to learn more in tandem with a client. The uniting factor in my approach is that it centers you in identifying what works, what doesn’t, and how best we can move together toward the outcome you’d like to see.
