Getting to know Clare Smith

I’m Clare Smith, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist. I’m passionate about using creative modalities to help clients find themselves and grow, and my work focuses primarily on children, adolescents, and young adults, using Play Therapy, Art Therapy, and EMDR to make it easier to communicate and process life’s challenges. I have extensive experience and training in trauma-informed care and helping families heal from difficult experiences. I’m LGBTQ+ affirming and have worked with individuals from many different backgrounds. My goal is to help families learn to communicate effectively and treat one another with kindness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I create a non-judgmental space where you and your family can tell your story in whatever way feels most comfortable — that might mean talking it through, or it might mean play, art, or other creative approaches, especially for children and teens who don’t always have the words yet. I bring a trauma-informed lens to everything I do, and I’m LGBTQ+ affirming, with experience supporting individuals and families from many different backgrounds. Whatever you’re navigating, my hope is that you leave sessions feeling more understood and better equipped to communicate with the people you love.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before your first session, our Client Care Coordinator, Heather, will reach out to complete paperwork and make sure I’m a good match for what you’re looking for — so we can focus on you from the beginning. For adults, the first few sessions are about getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and identifying what you’d like to change or work toward. From there, I tailor therapy to your individual needs and goals. You’re the expert on your own life, and I bring the clinical knowledge and tools. Together, we’ll decide what feels most helpful and adjust along the way. For teens, a parent joins for part of the first session before I begin meeting individually with the teen. For younger children, the first session is parents only, with both parents encouraged to attend. If parents are divorced, both must consent to treatment. After that, I meet with your child using developmentally appropriate approaches such as Child-Centered Play Therapy, art, and sand tray therapy. I also meet with parents every 4–6 weeks to discuss progress and ways to support goals at home. Regardless of age, therapy is collaborative, individualized, and designed to grow and change with you.
